DURHAM, N.C. – After making a run to the NCAA Championship, the Duke women's soccer team came in No. 2 overall in the final NSCAA National rankings that were released Tuesday. The ledger matches the highest ranking in Duke history, which also happened in 2011 when the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA title match.
Penn State took the top slot after winning its first NCAA Championship, followed by Duke, Florida State, Rutgers, Virginia, Stanford, West Virginia, Florida, Texas A&M and Connecticut. The Blue Devils had to go through Florida, Stanford and Florida State to advance to the championship match during their NCAA Tournament run.
Duke concluded the season with a 14-6-5 overall record under the direction of head coach
Robbie Church. After finishing the regular season eighth in the ACC with a 4-3-3 record, Church led the Blue Devils to an improbable run to Cary, N.C. Duke knocked off two No. 1 seeds (Florida State, 2-0; Stanford, 1-1, 3-2 in PKS) and second-seeded Florida, 2-1.
On the year, the Blue Devils were led by freshmen
Taylor Racioppi and
Kayla McCoy in scoring with seven and eight goals, respectively. Racioppi, who hails from Ocean Township, N.J., posted a team-best 20 points, while McCoy added 18.
Ashton Miller (15),
Imani Dorsey (13),
Toni Payne (13) and
Christina Gibbons (11) also collected double-digit points.
Duke will return 10-of-11 starters in 2016 as the Blue Devils only lose starting midfielder
Kara Wilson. The Blue Devils will also welcome back its top 11 scorers and the NCAA College Cup Defensive MVP, goalkeeper
EJ Proctor. Duke returns all of its defenders, which helped lead the Blue Devils to the second-most shutouts in school history with 14.
Along with all the returners, Church is expected to bring in another top recruiting class to the mix that will sign in February.
