DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off playing in the NCAA Championship Sunday, Duke University junior defender
Rebecca Quinn will head to Brazil for the International Tournament of Natal to meet up with the Canadian National Team.
This will be the first action for the Canada Women's National Team since placing sixth at the FIFA Women's World Cup this past summer. The team is getting prepared to qualify for the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics.
“The tournament in Brazil is part of the assessment phase, so we will be bringing in a lot of young players in November, and through into the tournament in Brazil in December,” Canada head coach John Herdman said. “We know a lot about the players that have been with the team in the past, so some of the players coming to Brazil will be those we need to learn a little bit more about as we look to keep improving the team for RIO.”
Quinn started 20-of-23 matches on the season, while registering three goals. A Third Team All-ACC selection, Quinn helped lead Duke to 14 shutouts on the year, which is the second-most in school history.
Canada will compete against Brazil, Mexico and Croatia in the Natal tournament beginning on December 9. Quinn, who is a native of Toronto, Canada, will be arriving late to the tournament after attending the NCAA College Cup.
Canada will open the group stage of the Natal tournament against Mexico on December 9, before taking on Croatia on December 13 and the home side Brazil on December 16. The third place and final matches will take place on December 20.
