“Obviously not a great team game for a lot of reasons, but I did love Becca [Greenwell's] rebounding and her tenacity on the floor. That's very important to recognize. That nine rebounds, hoping for 10 or more there, but just her overall game – love to see it. It's important for her growth and it certainly helps the team. The rest of it was pretty average stuff after that.”
On the team's apparent lack of energy on the court today:
“There is a lot I like and a lot I don't like. I think the energy I will put that on the team and the captains and the people that play. Their job is to get the team ready in that regard. They don't have anything to do but play basketball so I have no excuse for that whatsoever, but I think you're right about that. Obviously I'm not pleased, I'll never be pleased to be outrebounded by a much smaller team so we'll just continue to forge ahead and work on things and go from there. But you let a team get 20 offensive rebounds in your own gym and they're pretty much three to four inches shorter than you, that's a concept of hustle. That's a concept of desire and that's just what it is.”
On what Duke did differently defensively in the second and quarters than in the first:
“I think we just again defensively we were not focused. Giving second shots – if you give any team, I don't care who the team is, you give any team second shots you're going to have a chance to play average basketball. Box outs and rebounding, that has to be a culture on the team. That has to be promoted certainly by the coaches when we do our film or we do our practice, but mostly by the team. They should be talking about it. This team better be talking about it, because it was very unimpressive. It was a very boring game. I felt bad for the fans. What a bore. That was an extremely boring game.”
On heading into conference play now:
“You just go and play. We play great teams in our conference. Maybe you get a little ticked off and decide that you're going to do what you're supposed to do.”
Redshirt Sophomore Guard Rebecca Greenwell
On whether the team looked past UNCW:
“I think we could have done a better job of preparation. I could tell the energy was a little low before the game and that just is put on me and the other captains. We can't do that. We need to play the same way for every opponent, and I think that showed a little bit today.”
On how she can help the rest of the team be more cohesive:
“I think we just need to work on being more consistent, whether it's hustle, heart out there, talking. Azurá [Stevens] has those leadership qualities – I know she can do that day in and day out. So I think we just need to work on bringing that to other players on the team because everyone has the potential to do it.”
On whether UNCW's lack of size created matchup problems:
“I think it helped us, really, with some of the plays we ran. When the smaller guards were on us, I think that worked out. They were really playing tight on Azurá in the first half but I think she did a better job in the second half taking advantage of that. I think we played to our skill set.”
On UNCW's success with their dribble penetration:
“Our one-on-one stops were a problem for us tonight. They had a very quick first step and we were letting them drop by us, so we need to work on that.”
UNC Wilmington head coach Adell Harris:
Opening Statement:
“I am extremely proud of our team for fighting. We talk about fighting, and how you can't win a battle without throwing punches and I thought we threw punches for 40 minutes. We obviously turned the ball over too much but I am extremely proud of our overall effort for 40 minutes.”
On what UNCW did well this game:
“I think we made it tough for them offensively. In the first half we got offensive rebounds and a lot of second chance shot opportunities. We just played tougher in the first, and then they woke up.”
On shot selections:
“We talked about using the floater a lot in the lane area because we were not going to be able to get to the backboard for a layup and I thought our guards did a pretty decent job getting to those spots on the floor and shooting floaters. We are a team with no superstar so everybody has to be ready to take their shots. If it does not go in, then it does not go in, but that is not the end of the world for us. We have to be able to go get a second shot or a third shot if necessary. I think we need a lot of possessions in games to score points. We do not have someone that we can just throw it into like Azurá Stevens and life is really easy, it's not. However, I kind of like it like that, because you do not know what you are going to get from us. You can look at a stat sheet if you want but I guarantee you that our team will probably play different than what you prepared for.”
On what the team needs to improve on the most:
“We have to protect the ball, and protect our possessions because we need them. I think if we do that then we will get enough attempts to score the points that we need. Our defense has to be great, we cannot just be good, we have to be great."
UNC Wilmington Sophomore Center Rebekah Banks:
On coming back home to play Duke:
“It was pretty exciting. I am from Durham and my sister goes to Duke. I am a big Duke fan in general until today. My mentality was to go out there and play. These girls are just like us, they get up, they work out just like us and we you just have to throw punches like coach said, regardless of the fact that you watch them on TV.”
On going forward:
“What I think our team does well is that when we come against adversity we sort of stick more together. If we band together against the rest of our opponents then I think that we are going to do well.”
