DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University sophomore women's golfer
Leona Maguire was named the 2015 Women's Amateur of the Year in the 2015 Irish Golf Writers' Awards, sponsored by Carr Golf.
Maguire along with Shane Lowry (Professional of the Year), Paul Dunne (Men's Amateur of the Year), and Claire Dowling (Distinguished Services to Golf) will officially receive their accolades at the IGWA Awards, which take place in Castleknock Golf Club on January 21st, 2016.
A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire holds the No. 1 slot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, after an impressive 2014-15 year of golf. She was awarded the Mark H. McCormack Medal, 2014-15 ANNIKA Award and WGCA National Player of the Year as a rookie with the Blue Devils.
She collected a school-record 70.78 stroke average, while notching eight top five and 10 top 10 placements out of 11 tournaments during the 2014-15 campaign. The First Team All-America, ACC Player and Rookie of the Year totaled three victories on the season at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, ACC Championship and the South Bend Regional.
The leading qualifier after the stroke play stage of the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship at Portstewart Golf Club in Northern Ireland, Maguire reached the final 16. In June, she was part of the Great Britain and Ireland team which lost to their continental European counterparts in the Vagliano Trophy at Malone Golf Club and was undefeated, securing 3 ½ points out of 4.
In a professional event on the Ladies European Tour this past summer, she finished one shot behind the winner, Beth Allen at the ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters at Buckinghamshire Golf Club.
