INDIANAPOLIS – Duke University graduate student Marshall Plumlee was named a nominee for the 2016 Allstate NABC Good Works Team in an announcement by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
The 10-member team, which will be announced in February, is intended to shine a spotlight on a select group of student-athletes who have shown dedication to community service and altruism in their communities. Former Duke star Grant Hill, a two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star, is set to headline the voting panel.
As a member of the Duke men's basketball program, Plumlee is involved in the Read with the Blue Devils program, which seeks to aid area teachers in encouraging children to read at an early age. Plumlee also takes part in visits to the Duke Children's Hospital and the Emily K Center, whose mission is to inspire students to dream big, act with character and purpose, and reach their potential as leaders in their communities.
In his life outside basketball, Plumlee has dedicated himself to serving his country as a contracted member of the Duke ROTC program. He is currently on track to complete requirements to become an Army officer.
In the summer of 2015, the Warsaw, Ind., native took part in a 28-day Cadet Leadership Course at Fort Knox, which is the Army's largest training exercise and serves as the U.S. Army Cadet Command's capstone event.
Duke's leader in blocks (2.4) and steals (1.3) per game, Plumlee is averaging career highs of 6.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in a career-best 26.0 minutes per game. He has started each of Duke's first seven contests and is shooting 73.7 percent from the floor.
