WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – On the next-to-last day of Duke's men's tennis team's fall season, the Blue Devils turned in strong performances in singles with two players advancing to the consolation finals. In all, Duke recorded three victories on Saturday at the Wake Forest Invite.
The Blue Devils were strongest in the A1 singles flight with freshman Vincent Lin and junior TJ Pura claiming victories to move to the consolation finals against each other Sunday. Lin earned the biggest win of the weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against No. 1 seed in the draw, Wake Forest's Romain Bogaerts. Pura defeated Georgia Southern's Rise Lanne, 6-3, 7-5.
In the A2 flight, freshman Ryan Dickerson fell to Wofford's Haris Poric, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7) in the consolation bracket semifinals. Dickerson will face Dartmouth's Roko Glasnovic Sunday in the 11th place match. In the same flight, freshman Adrian Chamdani suffered a 6-2, 6-3 setback to East Carolina's Kasey Countee. Chamdani takes on Radford's Janken Thoen on Sunday in the 15th place match.
Senior Daniel McCall represented the Blue Devils in the B1 flight and dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Tennessee Tech's Guillermo Nicolas. McCall and Wake Forest's Anthony Delcore will play in the seventh place match Sunday.
Senior Josh Levine was the Blue Devils' lone representative in the winners' bracket semifinals, but lost a hard-fought three-set decision, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) to Wisconsin's Alexander Kokorev in flight B2. Levine plays Alberto Estaban of Tennessee Tech on Sunday in the third place match.
In the C1 flight, freshman Jason Lapidus topped Gerald Sola of Campbell 6-4, 6-1 and will play in the fifth place match Sunday against Wofford's Alan Poric. The D1 flight had sophomore Andrew DeJoy lose to Liberty's Ryan Heller 7-6 (5), 6-7 (1), 1-0 (1). DeJoy rounds out his weekend Sunday against Liberty's Max Borcuti in the 15th place match.
In doubles, the A1 team of McCall and Chamdani dropped an 8-2 decision to Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen and Kevin Lai in the semifinals. The two will play East Carolina's Tendai Tapfuma and James Ling in the third place match Sunday.
The B1 doubles flight featured Pura and Lapidus, who fell to UNC Greensboro's Connor Thompson and Danny Mack, 7-6 (5), in the semifinals. Pura and Lapidus completed their doubles play for the weekend with the setback.
