DURHAM, N.C. – With the exception of sophomore Nicolas Alvarez, the Duke men's tennis team will end its fall season this weekend at the Wake Forest Invite. The full team besides Alvarez will travel to Winston-Salem, while Alvarez's season will be extended by a week for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in Flushing, N.Y.
“Every match, opportunity and tournament is important, especially with this young of a group,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “Overall, we didn't have a great regional, but we've had two weeks here of really focused training. We've had two really good weeks of practice.”
So far this fall, freshmen Adrian Chamdani and Vincent Lin are tied for the team lead with six singles wins each. Senior Josh Levine (4-3) and junior TJ Pura (3-2) are also above .500 this fall.
In doubles, the pair of Chamdani and Lin is 2-1 as is Lin with classmate Ryan Dickerson. Freshman Catalin Mateas will also make his debut, primarily in doubles, after missing the early portion of the fall due to injury.
“Each guy we're working on specific areas with,” Smith said. “We have been trying to have very focused and hard practices. We've also spent a lot of time working on conditioning.
“Our consistency just hasn't quite been there this fall, but this tournament is another opportunity to compete, get some wins and implement the things we've been working on.”
