DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Nicolas Alvarez has received the ITA Wild Card to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship later this month in Flushing, N.Y. Only 32 singles players will compete in the prestigious event at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center from November 12-15.
“We are extremely grateful to the ITA for extending this wild card,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “Nico is thrilled to have the opportunity to compete in the premiere event of the college fall season. He has been working hard and playing very well, and it will be exciting to watch him battle against the best players in college tennis next week.”
Alvarez has gone 4-2 this fall with all six matches coming against nationally ranked opponents. He began his fall campaign with a second place finish at the Oracle/ITA Masters, winning a pair of three-set victories at the event. He topped Baylor's Julian Lenz, ranked No. 4 in the preseason, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 and defeated Texas Tech's 18th-ranked Felipe Soares 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-0 in the semifinals of the Oracle/ITA Masters. In the championship match of the event, Alvarez fell to TCU's Cameron Norrie, ranked No. 15 in the preseason, 6-3, 7-6 (2).
In his only other fall action, Alvarez went 1-1 at the ITA All-American Championships main draw, downing Virginia Tech's Joao Monteiro in three sets and falling in straight sets to Illinois' Aron Hiltzik.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season.
