RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico – Behind very balanced scoring, the 15th-ranked Duke women's basketball team closed out the Cancun Challenge Saturday with an 85-34 victory over Texas State to take home the Mayan Tournament championship at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Sophomore Azurá Stevens scored a game-high 19 points and was named MVP of the tournament, while redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell was selected to the Mayan All-Tournament team.
Duke improved to 6-1 on the season, while Texas State dropped to 2-4. The Blue Devils won all three contests in the Cancun Challenge by an average of 31.7 points and hit 51.6 percent of their field goals during the week.
The Blue Devils jumped out to an early lead and didn't let the foot off the gas holding a 27-7 lead after the first quarter. Duke hit 63.2 percent of its field goals in the first as eight different players scored for the Blue Devils. The lead was fueled by an 11-0 run to conclude the first period.
The Duke defense limited Texas State to only four second quarter points and pushed the lead to 49-11 at the half. Stevens paced the squad with a game-high 11 points at the break. Duke used an 18-0 run early in the second on its way to its largest halftime lead of the season.
Texas State's 11 first half points was tied for the seventh-fewest in a single game by a Duke opponent in school history.
The Bobcats scored more points in the third period than they did the entire first half as Texas State totaled 13 points and Duke increased its lead to 69-24 through the third.
Freshman Haley Gorecki registered double-digit scoring for the second straight contest with 11 points as she hit all three of her three-point attempts, while fellow rookie Angela Salvadores totaled a career-high eight assists, nine points and six rebounds in 23 minutes.
For the game, the Blue Devils hit a season-high 58.6 percent from the field and scored back-to-back games with 85 or more points for the first time this year. A total of 11 different Blue Devils scored on the afternoon.
Duke will return home to host Minnesota Thursday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m., in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The contest will be aired live on ESPN3 from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
