DURHAM, N.C. – Just a few games into the start the 2015-16 season, the Duke Blue Devils already have a boost for the 2016-17 campaign after receiving a National Letter of Intent from five-star prospect Leonna Odom. A 6-2 forward, Odom is currently tabbed as the top wing in the class and ninth overall on the 2016 HoopGurlz recruiting rankings list.
Touted as an extremely versatile perimeter player, Odom is expected to add a wealth of athleticism to the Duke lineup that is on full display when she is attacking the basket, both in the half court and in transition. On the defensive end, Odom shows natural talent as a rebounder and uses her lengthy wingspan to cover up passing lanes. She will complete her senior year at Chaminade College Prep in Los Angeles.
“Leonna is a special, special kid,” head coach
Joanne P. McCallie said. “She works hard, she's extremely athletic and she can play multiple positions – the four, the three and maybe even others. She's just so quick to the rim as a player, so she gives us another great rebounder. She is a person that is very comfortable around the paint and also has a great outside jump shot. As a defender, she's quick as a cat. We're very excited about her. She's working hard to get stronger. That's going to be an important key for her, but we love her family and we're excited to welcome them to the Duke family.”
Odom will join a relatively young group next season, with everyone returning from the 2015-16 squad besides graduate student
Amber Henson and senior
Mercedes Riggs.
“We're really excited [about the future],” commented McCallie. “All the experience our young players are getting this year and have been getting - and Becca [Greenwell] and Azurá [Stevens]. Leonna is somebody who adds more athleticism and gives us a better defensive presence and the ability to press and run. It's exciting.”
Odom heads into her final high school season after averaging 17.6 and 7.5 rebounds as a junior during her first season at Chaminade, leading the Eagles to a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Open Division title and a spot in Regional Open Division final. Odom garnered all-state second team honors from MaxPreps and all-area first team accolades from both the Los Angeles Daily News and Los Angeles Times. A varsity starter her entire high school career, Odom spent her freshman year at Los Alamitos and sophomore season at Mater Dei before transferring to Chaminade for her third and fourth years.
