MAUI, Hawaii – The second-ranked Duke women's tennis team concluded play at the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational Friday afternoon, competing against both singles players and doubles pairs from No. 7 California and Hawaii. The Blue Devils posted strong doubles play to open the final day of competition, amassing an overall record of 3-1, before closing the day with a 3-4 singles mark.
The Blue Devils asserted themselves in doubles, as senior Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Alyssa Smith earned a 6-3 win over Sarah Gealer and Paulina Petriskova of Hawaii. The victory marked the fourth doubles win of the season for the Duke pair. Senior Annie Mulholland and freshman Rebecca Smaller also earned a win Friday, posting a decisive 6-1 defeat of Hawaii's Martina Kostalova and Klara Pribylova. The win marked the first time the Duke duo teamed up alongside one another this season. Following their first win of the afternoon, Mulholland and Smaller returned to the courts and won a second doubles contest, this time against Cecilia Estlander and Lyann Hoang of California, by a score of 6-3. The Duke tandem of junior Beatrice Capra and freshman Samantha Harris were unable to defeat California's ninth-ranked pair of Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi, falling, 6-1.
After upsetting the 14th-ranked singles player in the nation yesterday, redshirt senior Rachel Kahan picked up her second singles victory in as many days with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hawaii's Viktoria Malova. Kahan moved to 9-5 in singles action with the result. Joining Kahan in earning singles victories were Smaller and Goldfeld. Smaller posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sarah Gealer of Hawaii, while Goldfeld, ranked 87th in singles by the ITA, bounced back from a first-set deficit to defeat Cindy Nguyen of Hawaii, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Capra faced stout competition in California's fifth-ranked Maegan Manasse, and although the Ellicott City, Md., native took the first set, Manasse fought back to win the remaining two sets and earn the victory, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Harris' match against No. 78 Klara Fabikova of California also went to three sets, with Fabikova picking up the win over the 55th-ranked Harris, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Similar to Capra and Harris, Mulholland's match also reached a third set against No. 64 Denise Starr of California, but the Portland, Ore., native ultimately fell, 5-7, 7-6, 6-0. Smith was also unable to upset her opponent, dropping her match against 30th-ranked Karla Popovic of California, 6-2, 6-2.
The Blue Devils return to competition Jan. 18, traveling to Williamsburg, Va., to face William & Mary in the team's first dual match of the 2015 season.
