DURHAM, N.C. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2014 Division I Preseason rankings Monday, with Duke posting four singles players, three doubles teams and one freshman on the national list. In addition to the preseason rankings, the ITA also released the names of competitors invited to compete in the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, held Sept. 27-Oct. 5 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Junior Beatrice Capra, ranked fourth, headlines the quartet of singles players on the ITA's poll. Capra moved up one place after concluding the 2014 season ranked fifth. Joining Capra among the top 15 in the nation is senior Ester Goldfeld, who opens the season ranked 12th in the nation. Sophomores Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith also garnered preseason recognition, appearing tied for 99th and 109th, respectively. Freshman Christina Makarova received the No. 3 ranking on the ITA's newcomer/freshman list.
The three doubles teams earning preseason rankings includes the 18th-ranked tandem of Goldfeld and Smith, the 24th-ranked team of Capra and Scholl and the 48th-ranked pair of senior Annie Mulholland and freshman Samantha Harris.
Selections for the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships include Capra and Goldfeld, who each earned a spot in the tournament's main singles draw, while Scholl, Smith and Makarova were named singles prequalifers. Redshirt senior Rachel Kahan was placed on the alternate list for the singles competition.
In doubles, the duo of Goldfeld and Smith, as well as the doubles pair of Capra and Scholl were slated as qualifying doubles teams for the tournament in California, with the team of Mulholland and Harris being named to the doubles alternate list.
Duke opens its fall season of play Friday, Sept. 12, at the Duke Invitational in Cary, N.C.
