ORLANDO, Fla. – Duke women's golf standouts
Leona Maguire and
Celine Boutier made a run at the individual title Tuesday, but finished in the top three of the Annika Intercollegiate, which was being played at the 6,247-yard, par 72 Watson Course at the Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Maguire, a freshman from Cavan, Ireland, carded a final round of 70 to finish with a 54-hole ledger of 208, which was one shot behind South Carolina's Justine Dreher (207). Boutier turned in a final round of 68 as she placed tied third with a six-under-par, 210.
As a team, Duke placed fifth overall after collecting rounds of 293, 286 and 288 for a total of 867. The Blue Devils had an under-par round going early on the back nine but suffered seven bogeys over the final six holes to finish at even par. South Carolina (854) claimed the team title with Arizona (861), Oklahoma State (862), Stanford (864), Duke (867), Southern California (869), Northwestern (871), Alabama (872), UCLA (875), Pepperdine (877), Arizona State (882) and Vanderbilt (882) rounding out the field.
“Celine hit almost every fairway and every green today and had a few more putts fallen she would have won,” said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. “We had great contribution from our freshmen. Leona was staking her irons, especially the second day. Lisa's even par round was crucial. The greens were very different than what we've been training on. They were much slower and not as true.”
For the second straight tournament, Maguire finished in the top five with rounds of 72, 66 and 70. Maguire's 54-hole ledger of 208 matched her score from the previous tournament and is the second-best three-day score by a Duke freshman in school history.
She had an uneventful start to her day with eight pars and a bogey on No. 12, but finished strong with birdies on No. 1, No. 2 and No. 8 to play the final nine at three-under-par. For the day, Maguire hit 13 fairways, 16 greens and had 32 putts.
A native of Montrouge, France, Boutier posted rounds of 71, 71 and 68 to open her junior campaign with a six-under-par, 210. She kicked off her day with birdies on No. 1, No. 14, No. 16 and No. 18 as she made the turn at one-under-par. Boutier went to five-under for the day with a birdie on the 130-yard, par three third, but closed with five pars and a bogey on the 337-yard, par four sixth hole as she missed her only green of the day. Boutier hit a total of 17 greens, 13 fairways and had 31 putts.
Sophomore
Sandy Choi held a one-under ledger through 12 holes before she went through a rough portion of her round with four consecutive bogeys. Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, closed with a three-over-par, 75, Tuesday. She finished tied 42nd with a 54-hole total of 224.
