PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. – Two members of the Duke women's tennis team opened competition Saturday morning with prequalifying draw action in the opening day of the 31st Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The two-week competition, held in Pacific Palisades, Calif., runs from Sept. 27 through Oct. 5.
Redshirt senior Rachel Kahan and sophomore Alyssa Smith, two of Duke's three representatives at the tournament, suffered defeats in their respective opening-round matches.
Smith, competing in her fifth singles contest of the fall season, fell to Long Beach's Maeva Razakasoa, 6-4, 6-3. With the first round defeat, Smith moves to 2-3 on the season.
Kahan also dropped her prequalifying contest, conceding a close match against Dartmouth's Taylor Ng, 6-4, 7-6 (6). After falling behind 5-2 in the first set, Kahan won two straight games to nearly bring the first set even before Ng closed out, 6-4. Looking to extend the match, Kahan forced the second set to a tiebreak, however Ng proved too much, winning the tiebreak, 8-6. With the loss, Kahan now owns a 1-3 record during fall 2014 play.
Senior Ester Goldfeld is scheduled to compete in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships main draw, which begins Thursday, Oct. 2.
