DURHAM, N.C.—With the first official practice just a couple of weeks away, Duke wrestling head coach Glen Lanham is excited to announce the Blue Devils' competitive 2014-15 schedule. In addition to six home duals, the Blue Devils also will get the opportunity to wrestle in The Garden in New York City for Grapple at the Garden.
Duke will face four Big Ten opponents, including top-20 finishers at NCAA Championships Nebraska, Michigan and Maryland. The early portion of the season is highlighted by a dual in Card Gymnasium with Nebraska Nov. 22. That will be Duke's lone home match until January of 2015.
It will mark the first time the Blue Devils and Huskers have met in a dual and is the fifth different Big Ten program Duke has faced with Lanham at the helm.
The Blue Devils start the season at the Hokie Open Nov. 8 and will get one more warm up before Nebraska comes to town at the Wolfpack Open Nov. 16.
After a trip home to Rome, Ga. for Immanuel Kerr-Brown against Shorter College Dec. 6, the Blue Devils will break for final exams and prepare for a trio of duals in the Grapple at the Garden event. Duke is slated to wrestle against Northern Iowa, former ACC foe Maryland and George Mason in New York.
Following a short break for the holidays, Duke returns to campus to prepare for the prestigious Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Duke opens ACC competition five days later at NC State. The Blue Devils and Wolfpack will be wrestling for the 80th time in the programs' histories. Duke is 1-1 against NC State under Lanham after a hard-fought 25-13 setback last season.
The ACC slate continues four days later with the Pitt Duals. In addition to wrestling conference foe Pittsburgh, Duke will battle Eastern Michigan and Lock Haven for a full day of wrestling. It will be the second time in three seasons the Blue Devils will have faced Eastern Michigan and Lock Haven.
The Blue Devils will take a break from dual action with the Appalachian State open Jan. 24 before finishing out the year with nine duals over the final month of the regular season.
Duke welcomes the trio of Drexel, American and Appalachian State to Durham Jan. 31 for a full day of wrestling before hitting the road to take on Gardner-Webb. The Blue Devils will be looking for their third straight win over Appalachian State and will be wrestling Drexel for the second straight season.
Rounding out the home schedule for the Blue Devils are Sacred Heart and North Carolina, Feb. 7 and 11, respectively. It marks the first time Duke and Sacred Heart will meet, while the Tar Heels and Blue Devils square off for the 90th time. North Carolina has had command of the rivalry recently as Duke looks to capture a win over its Tobacco Road rival.
The final week of the regular season features three road duals for Duke as it travels to Virginia Tech Feb. 14 and to Michigan State and Michigan the following week. It will be the inaugural dual with the Spartans, which finished three spots behind the Blue Devils at the NCAA Championships in 2014.
A two-week rest awaits the Blue Devils after the regular season as they taper into postseason action at the ACC Championships March 8. Pittsburgh will serve as the host of the conference championship tournament.
