DURHAM, N.C. - Three members of the Duke women's tennis team travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif., to compete in the 31st Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The two-week competition begins Saturday, Sept. 27, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 5. Prequalifying rounds open Sept. 27-28, followed by the qualifying rounds, scheduled for Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The main draw of the contest is slated for Oct. 2-5.
The Blue Devils are represented at the event by redshirt senior Rachel Kahan, senior Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Alyssa Smith. In singles, Kahan and Smith begin tournament play in the prequalifying singles draw, while Goldfeld opens singles action in the main draw.
Smith is scheduled to begin tournament play by facing Long Beach's Maeva Razakasoa at 11:30 a.m. (ET). Kahan also opens competition Saturday, with an opening round contest against Dartmouth's Taylor Ng. Kahan's match is set for a 2:30 p.m. (ET) start.
The prequalifying draw is comprised of 64 singles players. A singles player must win three rounds to advance to the qualifying draw, with a total of eight singles players advancing from pre-qualifying play to the qualifying draw.
Goldfeld and Smith are also scheduled to participate in the doubles competition, with the Duke duo playing out of the qualifying draw. Goldfeld and Smith compete as a doubles team for the first time this season after posting an 11-7 record in 2013.
At last season's Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, the Blue Devils saw then sophomore Beatrice Capra advance to the round of eight before falling to eventual runner-up, Robin Anderson of UCLA. Recent graduate Hanna Mar reached the round of eight in the consolation bracket of the main draw before suffering a defeat against eventual consolation bracket main draw champion Julia Elbaba of Virginia.
