Sandy Choi each carded rounds of three-under-par, 69, on the first day of the Cougar Classic Sunday as the defending NCAA champion Blue Devils opened the 2014-15 campaign at the 6,204-yard, par 72 Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.
As a team, Duke sits tied ninth overall with a six-over-par, 294. Wake Forest turned in a six-under-par, 282, and leads Arkansas (283), NC State (287), UCF (288), Virginia (288), Mississippi State (289), UCLA (290), College of Charleston (293), Tennessee (294), Charleston Southern (294) and Duke (294) rounded out the top 11 teams.
Maguire and Cho are tied third overall and four shots off individual leader Sierra Sims of Wake Forest (65). The 18-hole ledger by Maguire is the lowest career-opening round by a Duke freshman since 2005-06 by Amanda Blumenherst.
A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire birdied her first collegiate hole as she sank a putt on the 393-yard, par four No. 1. She went on to make the turn at even par as she turned in seven pars and a bogey on No. 7. On the back nine, Maguire birdied No. 12, No. 16 and No. 18 to finish with a 69. She hit 13 greens, 13-of-14 fairways and had 28 putts on the day.
Choi, who is from Seoul, South Korea, rolled in a team-high six birdies on the day, including five from inside the 5-8 foot range. After carding a birdie on No. 3, Choi held a one-under-par score until a bogey at No. 6. She sank her second birdie on No. 9 to make the turn at one-under. Choi opened the back nine with a bogey, but responded with back-to-back birdies on No. 11 and No. 12. Her birdie on the 332-yard, par four 12th was after she drained a 17-foot putt. A bogey on No. 14 brought her back to one-under, but Choi closed with back-to-back on No. 17 and No. 18. She hit 12 fairways, 15 greens and had 30 putts in round one.
Fellow freshman
Lisa Maguire kicked off her collegiate career with a two-over-par, 74, and is tied 47th overall. Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, hit 13 fairways, 13 greens and had 33 putts Sunday. She registered 16 pars and had bogeys on No. 4 and No. 14.
Junior
Yi Xiao opened the season with an 82, but played her final six holes at even par as she totaled four pars, one birdie on No. 18 and a bogey on the 16th hole. She hit 11 fairways, five greens and had 28 putts. Senior
Irene Jung finished Sunday with a 94.
As a team, Duke carded 11 birdies, while Choi and
Leona Maguire collected 10 of the 11. The Blue Devils are playing the Cougar Classic without National Player of the Year
Celine Boutier along with freshman
Gurbani Singh.
