NANJING, China – Incoming freshman Nicolas Alvarez represented his home country of Peru this week at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. Alvarez was one of just two male players from Peru competing in the tennis competitions, taking part in the 32-player men's singles draw and teaming with fellow countryman Juan Jose Rosas in the men's doubles draw.
Alvarez and Rosas reached the quarterfinal round in doubles, topping Sharmal Dissanayake of Sri Lanka and Pavle Rogan of Montenegro in the first round by scores of 6-2, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, the Peruvian duo dropped a tough 6-4, 7-6 decision to Brazil's Orlando Moraes Luz and Marcelo Zormann Silva.
In singles, Alvarez fell to Andrey Rublev of Russia, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of play.
Alvarez appeared in a number of junior international tournaments this summer leading up to the Youth Olympics. The Blue Devil signee competed in the singles and doubles draw at the Roland Garros Junior French Championships as well as at the Nike International Roehampton and The Junior Championships, Wimbledon. He reached the doubles round of 16 at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
