NEW YORK – Duke wrapped up an action-packed day of outstanding wrestling with a 24-9 victory over Big Ten foe Maryland at the third annual Grapple at the Garden at historic Madison Square Garden. The Blue Devils finished the day 3-0 with dual wins over Northern Iowa, George Mason and the Terps.
Duke (4-1) opened the day with a 21-16 victory over Northern Iowa and followed that by rolling past George Mason 24-9.

Jacob Kasper went undefeated at 197, 157 and 184, respectively, and four other Blue Devils finished the day with 2-1 records. Kasper was the high point scorer on the day, netting bonus points for Duke in his final two wins.
The victory over the Terps marked the first time since 2005. The 24 points against Maryland are tied for the second most Duke has scored against Maryland in the 70 meetings between the two teams.
Maryland got off to a quick start, winning three of the first four matches for a 9-3 lead, but did not win once in the final six bouts. Much like he did in his previous two matches, Kerr-Brown put the Blue Devils back in the wins column with a 7-3 decision over Louis Mascola. Kerr-Brown closes out the calendar year with a team-best 11-2 overall record.
Brian Dorsey, in his first dual of the year, evened the score with a 5-2 decision at 165 pounds. The victory was the eighth of the year for the Texas native.
Trey Adamson completed his strong day with a 3-0 decision that gave the Blue Devils the lead for good, 12-9.
The winning continued for the Blue Devils at 184 pounds as Kasper pulled in five points for a 17-9 Duke lead with a 21-5 technical fall over Anthony Gardner. Kasper moves to 12-3 on the year and 2-2 in duals.
Hartmann, ranked fifth and wrestling in a Duke singlet for the first time this season, grinded out a 3-0 victory at 197 to clinch the victory. His triumph against the Terps marked the 50th of his career, pushing his total to 50-22.
Brendan Walsh completed the full day of wrestling by cruising to the 9-1 major decision over Ryan Kail at heavyweight.
Duke will break for the holidays before returning to action Jan. 1-2 at the prestigious Southern Scuffle. The Blue Devils open ACC completion Jan. 7 at NC State at 7 p.m.

Duke Drops Northern Iowa 21-16 to Open Grapple at the Garden
December 21, 2014
NEW YORK—The Duke University wrestling team opened the third annual Grapple at the Garden with an exciting 21-16 victory over Northern Iowa at historic Madison Square Garden Sunday morning. The Blue Devils grabbed six victories to hand the Panthers their second loss of the season.
Northern Iowa scored six points on a fall in the opening bout, but consecutive victories from
Bailey Jack at 133 and
Brandon Gambucci at 141 evened the score. Jack, trailing 4-3 heading into the third period, finished with a flurry. The rookie 133-pounder escaped just 19 seconds in and followed that with a takedown 20 seconds later to grab the 6-4 advantage en route to the 7-5 triumph.
Gambucci was in control the entire match against Tyler Willers to post his first dual victory of the year. He scored an early takedown and never looked back to win 5-1.
Trailing 9-6 after a hard-fought battle by
Tanner Hough at 149,
Immanuel Kerr-Brown tied the match with a 7-2 decision at 157. The senior captain trailed 2-0 early, before scoring the bout's final seven points.
A forfeit by the Panthers at 165 put the Blue Devils up for good, while wins by
Jacob Kasper and
Conner Hartmann at 184 and 197 clinched the win for Duke.
Kasper, much like in Duke's other dual wins, was in complete control for the seven minutes. He led 6-0 before Cody Caldwell's attempt to come back fell way short in the 7-3 decision for the Blue Devil sophomore.
Fifth-ranked Hartmann did not disappoint in his much anticipated return to the mat for the Blue Devils, earning his 48th career victory with a 6-1 triumph over Basil Minto.
Duke completes the day versus George Mason and former ACC foe Maryland at 10 a.m., and 12 p.m.
