SECACUS, N.J. – The Blue Devils return to East Rutherford, N.J., tonight to face reigning national champion Connecticut at the Izod Center (formerly the Meadowlands). Duke enters the contest on a 13-game win streak, which includes a thrilling 79-78 victory over Connecticut on March 24, 1990, when Christian Laettner hit a 17-foot jump shot at the buzzer to move the team to the Final Four.
Duke takes a 20-1 overall record while playing at East Rutherford into Thursday's matchup. The Meadowlands played host to a number of exciting and memorable moments in Duke basketball history. Here is a quick look at some of those moments.
On March 26, 1988, senior Billy King helped Duke advance to the Final Four by defeating top-seeded and No. 1 Temple, 63-53. Defensively, King held Temple's offensive threat, Mark Macon, to just 6-of-29 shooting from the field and led a defense that allowed the Owls to shoot just 28.0 percent from the floor.
Exactly one year later, the Blue Devils returned to East Rutherford to face No. 2 Georgetown in an NCAA regional championship contest, with similar results. Duke defeated the Hoyas, 85-77, boasting three 20-point scorers in the game (Danny Ferry, Phil Henderson and Christian Laettner). Henderson had the marque moment in the game with an emphatic slam over Alonzo Mourning.
The Blue Devils closed the 90's in East Rutherford much like they opened the decade, besting Temple, 85-64, on March 21, 1999. The win advanced Duke to the Final Four for the fifth time in 10 years. Duke took an early lead in the game, thanks in large part to a 17-2 run sparked by Trajan Langdon's three consecutive three pointers, and maintained control throughout the remainder of the contest.
On Dec. 18, 2001, Duke scored a dramatic, 95-92, come from behind win over Kentucky. Trailing by double figures Coach K pulled all five starters to light a fire under the unit. The reserves, led by Matt Christensen, trimmed the deficit and Jason Williams exploded over the final 10 minutes of play to finish with 38 points.
A dominant Duke performance came on Dec. 10, 2005, when the Blue Devils, then No. 1 in the country, faced off against second-ranked Texas. Duke bested the Longhorns, 97-66, with a second-half, 19-2 Blue Devil run that put the game out of reach. All-American JJ Redick posted a game-high 41 points for the Blue Devils.
No. 6 Duke dominated another top 10 matchup Dec. 20, 2008 posting an 82-64 win over No. 7 Xavier. The Blue Devils opened the game on a 22-3 run and led by 31 points at the half.
Jon Scheyer netted 23 points in the win, while Gerald Henderson added 19.
Duke faces Connecticut tonight, with tipoff set for 8 p.m. The game will be televised live by ESPN.
