Duke Head Coach Mike KrzyzewskiOpening Statement: “This is a good game for us because Central Missouri is so well coached. We are bigger than they are and more athletic but not any better coached than they are. They really play off of each other well. They have a system and that's why we have played the Division II national champions every year because you're always going to get a team that is well coached, they are winners, they believe they can win. So this was a good game for us. I thought our effort was outstanding. We played extremely hard and completely different offensively than the first game in that we hit everything in the first game. And for a while today we hit nothing. Then our offense wasn't run as well because we have been accustomed to in that one game leading to something easy. It's very good for us. Shooting is the most inconsistent part of the game. We had good shots; our first four threes were in and out. So you are losing when you should be up by 10 if they go in. The game is funny that way and so I was happy with our guys. We thought it knocked us back a bit defensively to begin with. I think they had 13 points in the first five minutes and then they ended up with 22 at the half. So our defense from that point on was very, very good and now we are ready to go and ready to start the season.”
On team's unselfishness:“At the highest level, they are very unselfish. They are also unselfish defensively and people don't usually say it that way. In other words they will give up their bodies. Sometimes when you are selfish defensively you hug your man, you're off the ball or not there for help, you're not there to help on ball screens. When you're unselfish, our big guys are coming up on the ball screens. Our ball screen defense we've changed it this year to do what we've done with the U.S. team. We're committed to it and I think it's a good way of doing it. Our big guys are getting better in it.”
On Justise Winslow's progress:“Justise has been really good since day one. He is really good. He's already physically mature. He's got a great maturity about him on and off the court. Physically he is way ahead. He is 6'6, 225lbs and he's solid so he is not a normal freshman. He is an outstanding player and he plays both ends. He plays really hard and he is efficient. I think one of the cool things about the team so far is that we've scored a lot of points and we haven't had a guy get 20. But Justise was the leading scorer. He had 19 and 17 in the two games and very efficiently.”
On Justise Winslow being aggressive:“Justise has always been that way. He always played on a great AAU team. Even though he was the leading scorer by far on his high school team, he was unselfish. On the U.S. teams that he has played on, he doesn't need the ball long. Justise is a really easy guy to play with because the ball doesn't die in his hands. Usually when he has the ball he has it for a short period and something good happens with it.”
On 17-0 run:“Our defense was outstanding. If we were hitting shots it would have been more. That's the neat thing about that run. A lot of times when you have a run like that, first of all you don't have runs like that a lot, but when you do it's usually because you hit a three, get a turnover, hit another three. That wasn't this type of run, it was over a long period of time. I like that about our team even though we weren't knocking them down, it didn't affect our effort on the defensive end.”
On first impressions of recruits:“First impressions matter a lot. They aren't the final say but the first time I saw Tyus (Jones) he was in complete control of his team. He played with a great poise and was an outstanding leader. I saw him in the summer between his sophomore and junior years and I knew he's the guy that we want. He will continue to grow. He's being a little more aggressive with his shot, which is really good. He has 17 assists and two turnovers in two games and so he's a guy you like to play with because he is a pass-first point guard. But then guys are going to drop off on him and he has to be able to hit that relocation or that second or third pass three that you're going to get. When he does that, and he will because he is good, then we take a jump. We will get better.”
Duke Junior Rasheed Sulaimon“I definitely think we're playing at a better pace. To be honest with you, just from what I've seen in practice, we haven't shown anywhere near as fast as we can play. We can still play faster, but I think we're off to a good start. We're starting to get a good flow from playing somebody other than ourselves, and we're just going to keep getting better each and every day.”
On what it's been like with all of the very talented players on the team:“I thought it would be a challenge, but it's not hard at all when you have guys who are unselfish. We have great chemistry already, on and off the court. That's a plus – when you like each other. Second of all, when you have guys that are unselfish, who are willing to make the extra pass, it just makes the game that much more fun. It's been rather easy to make that transition to having new pieces and new guys, and I think it's solely because we're an unselfish group and we share the ball.”
On the experimental 30-second shot clock used during Duke's two exhibition games and Countdown to Craziness:“I like it better. It makes the game faster. And that's a point of emphasis that we've tried to make this year already – to play faster. That extra five seconds on defense makes a big difference after a while. I liked it though. It made the game quicker and played into our hands and what we're trying to do.”
Duke Freshman Justise Winslow“When we're out there, we just try to stay focused, stay disciplined, and make the simple plays. When Jah [
Jahlil Okafor] gets the ball, I know he's going to command a double-team, so I just make the easy play. But it was a lot of fun, that minute stretch [in the first half], when we got the momentum and got the lead.”
On his dunk in the second half and the pass from Tyus Jones:“It was a great pass. Tyus is a great facilitator. He's one of our leaders out there on the floor. He's just always finds guys when they're open. It was an easy pass, good play, and it really got the crowd into it too.”
On playing with so many talented teammates and how he fits his own game into the team chemistry:“I just try to play my game and try to figure out a way to mold that into the team game and be as productive as possible. You're playing with a lot of great players, and you have to learn to play with them, but at the same time, you've got to try and be yourself as much as possible.”
“On my drives, I try to stay aggressive, and if no one comes over [to help on defense], then I'm going to finish. But if a big man comes over, then I'm going to dish it out. Really, just staying under control, staying poised, taking good shots – I just try to take good shots. I don't try to force anything, and I think when I do that, I can be an efficient scorer.”
Duke Freshman Tyus JonesOn his pass to Justise Winslow in the second half that led to a Winslow dunk in transition:“He's one of my best friends, and we have a good chemistry, not only off the court but on the court. He knows that if he runs, I'm more than likely going to find him. So I just tried to make my guy bite on me, and I dropped it back to him, and I knew he'd take care of the rest.”
On how the transition to college basketball has been so far:“It's been great. I'm just trying to lock in and get better every day, improve every day, and just be sharp. That's the main thing, just trying to help this team out as much as I can and contribute as much as I can. Whatever the coaches want me to do and whatever I can do for my teammates, I'm willing to do.”
On whether he feels any pressure to be a leader on this team:“I don't [feel any pressure], and I credit my teammates for that. They've been very accepting of me, since the first day I got here. If I make a command on the court, they listen and respond to me and I do the same for them. They've made it easy on me as a point guard.”
Central Missouri Head Coach Doug KarleskintOn preparing for the rest of the season:“I think our guys really battle, and just as far as physicality, we want to be more physical, and that's one area of concern that I was worried about with this team and we now know that we can battle when we need to. I thought that we were especially verbal. We came up and hit a couple touch shots, and we didn't allow second chance points. Something that we emphasize: all 50-50 balls must be ours. You see a couple of our guys get on the floor, and that's what we pride ourselves on—being that blue collar team.”
On coaching against Coach K:“Oh man, it's a dream come true. He's one of the best. Right before tip, I looked down and it's just a surreal moment—coaching against a legend—and it's something I'll cherish for the rest of my life.”
Central Missouri Senior Guard Rakeem DickersonOn his thoughts of playing in this exhibition game:“I think it's pretty exciting. Growing up, everyone dreams of playing at Duke or North Carolina, so it was pretty exciting.”
On the quick start to the first half:“I think we just tried hard, and really really played. We started off pretty good, and once we stopped scoring we kind of started slipping.”
