Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening Statement
“It was a heartfelt game. I really appreciate our team's defense and rebounding. I think we seem to get a bit spoiled when the ball goes in and we had some difficulty obviously. I love the 24 offensive rebounds. I love the fact that we were 56-41 on the boards and really appreciated Oderah [Chidom]'s toughness and double-double. She was just great off the bench and attacking. Sierra [Calhoun] was aggressive as well. So we are just working to get better. We had some foul trouble. That was unfortunate. I didn't really understand it a lot. But, we had to go with different things because of that foul trouble. Basketball's a great game because it comes up with different challenges. So we had a little bit of a different challenge today with Azura [Stevens] out, with foul trouble, and things of that nature.”
On playing three games this Thanksgiving week…
“I think for us, it worked great because we really needed to grow through each game. We had a hiccup at Buffalo, where we didn't do a lot of things. I thought today we were much aggressive and effective in hustle plays and really dictating. We're in break, which is nice for the student-athletes. They're not in classes so they get to really concentrate on basketball.”
On playing a disciplined team…
“I think they were very disciplined and I think they should do very well as a team. They didn't seem to break out of it much. It was a little bit of stall-ball. They didn't take a shot until the last five or six seconds, particularly in the first half. We really had to concentrate on our defensive intensity, which was a good challenge for us. Again, for us, I think just moving the basketball, ball movement … they have that delayed 1-2-2 press. I think we could've attacked that more, especially in the first half. We passed around it, rather than trying to really get after it. That's one of the things that really changed in the second half. That of course, led to their zone or open man, which was much like a zone. I think Oderah really showed the way in the second half. You had to attack. The fact that we had 27 free throw attempts shows that we kicked it out a notch. If we would've capitalized more on those free throw attempts, it would've been more pleasurable for everybody.”
Duke Freshman Sierra Calhoun
On the transition and ease of collegiate level play:
“I'm starting to bring a lot more energy on the defensive end and knowing where I'm supposed to be. I feel like defense really makes me go on offense and I'm starting to rebound a lot more so everything is definitely starting to slow down.”
On the comfort of play, either back towards the basket or on the outside:
“I'm comfortable wherever, in the off season I worked on different aspects of my game, whatever coach needs me to do, whatever the lineup is, whoever is in the game, I'm comfortable.”
On what the team says to encourage one another:
“We just try to bring a lot of energy and pick each other up. Everyone that's on the floor we all go for each other and are rooting for each other. When we have those little lows, I feel like we're ready for those little lows and we do what we can to push through those.”
Duke Sophomore Oderah Chidom
On the mindset necessary to perform after rough first half play:
“I had a lack of focus in the first half and then at halftime I had teammates come up to me and tell me it was okay, it's a new half, zero-zero, start over, forget about the past and continue to play my game. Just having my teammates communicate and encourage me really helped.”
Stony Brook Head Coach Caroline McCombs
Opening Statement:
“I'm just really proud of how hard our team fought from the start until the end of the game. I thought that we really battled through a lot of things and I'm proud of how we played against a very good Duke opponent.”
On how she felt Stony Brook's zone defense worked against Duke:
“I think Duke does a great job of trying to get the ball inside to (Elizabeth) Williams, so we tried to not allow her to get a lot of those easy touches. With (Rebecca) Greenwell, she can score in a variety of ways. I think when she gets her feet set, she's really hard to guard on the three-point shot. In transition, she just likes to get it and go hard to the basket. We really focused on – whether we were in our man or zone – those two players as two of their go-to players. I think what hurt us were the boards. Just rebounding. I thought we would do a good job until they got the first shot, and then it was the second or third shot that they really converted on that broke down our defense.”
On the transition from being an assistant to a head coach:
“Actually, I probably got more nervous as an assistant than as a head coach. It's different. I'm calling the shots now and I'm making the final decision on the game plans. It has been really exciting. I love our team. I love how hard they work and they want to win, so it's fun to go to practice every day and help build them to be the best players and us to be the best team and program we can be.”
On the positives she took out of tonight's game:
“I thought that we competed throughout the game. It was really just the size factor on the boards, and we've out-rebounded our opponents. We're +10 in rebounding margin right now. We talk about that every day. That wins us ball games. That's just something we'll continue to focus on every day at practice. They take pride in rebounding, so it hurt us when we didn't get those boards.”
On Duke's ability to keep them out of the paint:
“They had 10 blocks. We tried to attack, but maybe not every time as much as I wanted us to. We were tentative to start the game. I thought that we built on that, Kori (Bayne-Walker) especially. She did a great job and that's why we kept giving it to her to try and get in those lanes and kick it to the shooters. I think that's just something we'll have to continue to work on.
Sophomore Guard Kori Bayne-Walker
On what she saw in Duke's defense that she thought she could exploit off the dribble:
“We were boxing out hard, getting the rebounds and getting them out on the outlets. That kind of opened up the lane to attack and they were going out on our shooters, so that helped opened up the lane a little.”
On what she did well that will help her during the rest of the season:
“I thought I got to the basket well and got the ball to our shooters, and our shooters shot well today.”
