DURHAM, N.C.—On the strength of his third-place showing at the Hokie Open this past weekend, redshirt senior Marcus Cain has climbed into the InterMat national rankings at 149 pounds in the No. 20 slot. Cain joins Immanuel Kerr-Brown and Conner Hartmann in the polls for a trio of Blue Devils represented in the top 20.
Kerr-Brown stayed put at 20th in the 157-pound division, while Hartmann remained fifth at 197. Both placed at the Hokie Open with Hartmann coming away with the title.
Cain, moving back down to 149 pounds in his final season, took third overall at the Hokie Open with a 3-1 overall record. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native opened the day with a 10-0 major decision and cruised to the semifinal round where he faced 2014 NCAA runner-up Devin Carter. Cain gave Carter everything he could handle in a narrow 9-6 decision. In the consolation final, Cain best third-seeded Christian Barber in a 10-7 decision.
Kerr-Brown also took third at 157 pounds with a 3-1 mark. The returning NCAA qualifier had no problems in his first two matches before falling to NC State foe Tommy Gantt to send him to the consolation final.
Picking up right where he left off, Hartmann relinquished just two points on the day to take home top honors. He registered consecutive falls to start the day and added a 2-0 decision in the semifinal round and beat Virginia Tech's Jared Haught 7-2 in the final.
The Blue Devils return to the mats Nov. 16 at the Wolfpack Open. Action begins at 9 a.m., at Carmichael Gymnasium.
