DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke University men's tennis team will have two representatives at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship next month in Flushing, N.Y., as senior Jason Tahir and freshman Nicolas Alvarez received bids. Only 32 singles players will compete in the prestigious event.
Duke joins Georgia, Oklahoma, USC, Virginia and host Columbia as the only programs with two participants in the tournament.
“It is extremely encouraging to have two singles players competing in USTA/ITA National Indoors, the most selective event in college tennis,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “This is a special reward at the end of the great fall season.”
Tahir, who was ranked No. 27 in the preseason by the ITA, earned a wildcard slot after a strong fall showing. The Rochester, N.Y., native began the season with consecutive defeats at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla., but has bounced back with wins in nine of his last 11 matches. The only two setbacks were to top-25 opponents in Tennessee's Mikelis Libietis (No. 24) and North Carolina's Brayden Schnur (No. 7). Tahir fell to Schnur in the championship match of the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional.
Alvarez was an automatic qualifier for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship after advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championship. He has a team-best 14-3 record this fall while going 4-2 against nationally-ranked opponents. The Lima, Peru, product is 12-2 in his last 14 matches with the losses coming to No. 2 Yannick Hanfmann of USC during the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championship and to Tahir in the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional.
“I am really excited for Jason and Nico to have this opportunity to compete at the US Open against the very best college players in the country,” Smith said. “It is an awesome event and it will be a lot of fun.”
The event runs from Nov. 6-9 in Flushing, N.Y., at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season.
