Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening Statement:
“It's just great to have the team out there, play, and go up and down, with officials, playing against each other. I know they're a bit tired of playing against each other, I'm sure they're looking forward to an exhibition here and something different, but I just like the things I saw. I found myself kind of watching and seeing Becca [Greenwell] so confident. You know so many people last year talked about the injury to Chelsea [Gray], the injury to Lex [Jones], what about Becca? Can you imagine her on the same team as [Tricia] Liston, like it was supposed to be? So I feel like I was just so taken by her, being back, being able to do what she does there. I think Becca played all positions beautifully that she played, point guard and shooting guard. And Azurá [Stevens] did a great job as well sort of playing different spots on the floor. Sierra [Calhoun] had some nice things she did, I felt like we had depth at the point guard position in a funny way because we never have depth at the point guard position. With this group, Mercedes [Riggs] was so confident as well so it was fun to see all of them do those things.”
Duke Redshirt Freshman Rebecca Greenwell
On her excitement of getting back on the floor:
“I'm really excited. This year's group is a lot different than the group from last year. We are a lot bigger, and there's just not one point guard or two point guards. Coach P was saying that four or five of us can run it, and also we have players that are versatile like Azura [Stevens], who can play in the post and a guard as well so I think that's really exciting, and that can definitely help us out and as we keep playing more games we will be more comfortable doing that so I think we have a lot of potential to do big things with all of our versatility.”
Duke Senior Ka'lia Johnson
On leading the team's younger players:
"Well I guess the challenge would be everyone is figuring out what they can do. Like Becca said, still figuring out how versatile they can be, and we had Azura [Stevens] playing inside and out, Erin [Mathias] can step out and hit the three if she wants to, and like we said we have multiple point guards. So in practice every day we find out something new a player can do and that is exciting for us because it makes the team more dangerous.”
