DURHAM, N.C. -- In her first action in a Duke jersey, redshirt freshman
Rebecca Greenwell buried 6-of-10 three-pointers for 18 points to lead all scorers in the annual Blue vs. White women's basketball game. The Blue squad came away with the 55-43 victory over White.
Rookie
Azurá Stevens finished with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-4 from long range, and 10 rebounds in her debut performance for the Blue Devils, while senior
Ka'lia Johnson registered 15 points and five boards. Junior
Mercedes Riggs rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points and a pair of steals.
The first quarter was highlighted by the sharp-shooting Greenwell. The Owensboro, Ky., native knocked down all three of her shots from long range to pace the Blue squad to a 14-14 tie after the opening 10 minutes.
The Blue squad, after rallying from a 7-3 deficit early in the game, started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to open up a 21-14 lead. Greenwell buried her fourth three of the game and
Lyneé Belton made it a two-point game on a put-back, but the white squad would never get any closer as Blue scored eight of the final 10 points of the period for a 29-21 lead at the half. Johnson led all scorers in the second frame with nine points.
Seniors
Elizabeth Williams and
Amber Henson shined for Blue in the third quarter, combining for nine of the team's 13 points. In the final period, Riggs threw in five of White's 10 points. Overall, the Duke freshmen combined for 45 of the overall 98 points.
Blue shot a solid 46 percent (20-of-44) from the field, including 7-of-16 from the three-point line. White hit 35.7 percent from the field and 40 percent (8-of-20) from behind the arc. Overall in the game Duke made 15-of-36 three-pointers and assisted on 18 of 35 field goals.
Williams grabbed six rebounds and four blocks in 35 minutes of action, while
Oderah Chidom pulled in eight rebounds. Belton finished with five boards to go along with her seven points.
Duke will get to see its first opponent Thursday, Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
