DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Team scored six runs in the fourth inning to down the Black Team, 10-2, in the first game of Duke baseball's annual Fall World Series Friday evening at Jack Coombs Field.
Senior Reed Anthes and sophomore Cris Perez both totaled three RBI to lead the Blue Team. Anthes drilled a game-tying, two-run homer in the bottom of the third, while Perez sent a solo shot over the fence to start the scoring in the fourth.
Freshman Daniel Calabretta added an RBI triple, rookie Michael Smiciklas contributed an RBI single, Anthes laced an RBI double and Perez belted a two-run single to account for the Blue Team's fourth-inning production.
Senior right-hander Andrew Istler registered the win. The Wellington, Fla., native allowed two runs over 5.0 innings. He struck out three, walked four and surrendered four hits. Redshirt junior Conner Stevens and freshman Luke Whitten combined for four shutout innings in relief to preserve the victory.
Freshman Chris McGrath took the loss for the Black Team.
In the top of the second, the Black Team grabbed an early 2-0 lead. Redshirt sophomore Jalen Phillips started the rally with a single. A Peter Zyla base hit then moved Phillips to second and senior Andy Perez drove in the first runs of the day with a two run single. Phillips and Zyla had three hits each for the Black Team.
The two squads meet for game two of the Fall World Series Saturday, Oct. 25 at Jack Coombs Field. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. Sophomore Bailey Clark gets the start for the Blue Team, while the Black team counters with redshirt freshman James Ziemba.
