CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team closed a successful weekend at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional on Monday with a second-place finish in the championship singles by senior Jason Tahir.
Tahir, the No. 4 seed in the draw, faced No. 1 seed Brayden Schnur of North Carolina and fell 6-3, 6-2.
“The team did really well this weekend,” Tahir said after Monday's match. “[Sophomore] TJ [Pura] did really well. It was a positive tournament for us.
“Personally, I didn't think I would be in the finals after my results at the ITA All-Americans and how my mind and body felt. But I managed to win some tough matches and make it to the finals.”
“I thought it was a great tournament for us,” head coach Ramsey Smith said of the regional. “This was a really good week for Jason, and the team as a whole. We had some really good results, highlighted by Jason, [freshman] Nicolas [Alvarez] and [senior] Raphael [Hemmeler]. TJ Pura had an excellent event and really stepped up after having a tough fall. We also saw some good things out of our doubles teams.
“Despite losing the finals here and not getting a title, I thought it was a great overall team effort. That's a good sign moving forward.”
Duke has two fall events remaining with the USTA/ITA National Indoors from Nov. 6-9 in Flushing, N.Y., and the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic from Nov. 7-9 in Bradenton, Fla.
