CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Members of the Duke women's tennis team played deep into the singles and doubles main draws of the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championships, however the Blue Devils were unable to advance to the championship round of the five-day tournament.
The doubles tandem of senior Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Alyssa Smith dropped a hard-fought semi-final round contest against Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle of North Carolina, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (7). The loss marked just the second time this season Goldfeld and Smith suffered a defeat, with the pair concluding the weekend's competition with a season record of 3-2.
Goldfeld returned to the courts for her quarterfinal match against South Carolina's Elixane Lechemia. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native outlasted Lechemia in a three-set contest, pulling out the 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 victory. Goldfeld then faced Clemson's Joana Eidukontye in a semifinal singles match. Goldfeld won the first set, but ultimately was unable to outlast Eidukontye, falling, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Goldfeld sits at 6-5 in singles play this fall.
Freshman Rebecca Smaller played into the quarterfinal round of the main draw before falling to Beatrice Gumulya of Clemson, 6-1, 7-5. Smaller's overall singles record this season moved to 7-5 with the loss.
Redshirt senior Rachel Kahan was forced to retire in her match, trailing Caroline Price of North Carolina, 6-0, 3-0. With the loss, the Unionville, Conn., native fell to 5-5 on the season in singles play.
