CARY, N.C. – The USTA/ITA Carolina Regional singles semifinals will have a heavy Duke feel as the Blue Devils had three student-athletes advance to the final four on Saturday. Duke played Round of 16 and quarterfinal singles as well as Round of 16 doubles on Saturday at the Cary Tennis Park. In addition to the three Blue Devils moving to the singles semifinals, Duke had two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals to be played on Sunday.
The first Duke player to move to the semifinals was senior Jason Tahir, the No. 4 seed in the draw, who opened the day with a comeback victory against North Carolina's Jack Murray, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Tahir was even at one set each in the second match before defeating No. 5 seed Hunter Harrington of Clemson 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Freshman Nicolas Alvarez, the No. 9 seed in the draw, downed No. 6 seed Austin Powell of N.C. State 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Alvarez was forced to come from behind as he lost the first set to North Carolina's Ronnie Schneider 6-7 (6) before storming back to upset the No. 2 seed 6-1, 6-4 in the last two sets. Tahir and Alvarez will play each other at 10 a.m. Sunday to advance to Monday's championship.
Completing the Duke trio was senior Raphael Hemmeler, who earned a 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Christian Seraphim of Wake Forest in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Hemmeler also lost his first set before taking the last two. North Carolina's Oystien Stero took the opener 7-6 (2) before Hemmeler responded with 6-3, 6-3 wins to take the match and a place in the semifinals. He'll face No. 1 seed Brayden Schnur of North Carolina at 10 a.m. Sunday.
