CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team opened the first day of the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championships Thursday afternoon by advancing two of the squad's three doubles pairs to the round of 16. Friday, day two of the five-day tournament, marks the beginning of singles main draw play, as well as round of 16 doubles action.
The Duke tandem of redshirt senior Rachel Kahan and freshman Rebecca Smaller remained undefeated this season after opening doubles play Thursday with a perfect 2-0 record. Kahan and Smaller first earned an 8-1 victory over UNC-Greensboro's Masey Demoss and Amy Ellis before defeating Appalachian State's duo of Clare Cox and Mackenzie LaSure, 8-7 (8). Kahan and Smaller take their 6-0 doubles record into round of 16 play Friday, where they'll face South Carolina's Hadley Berg and Elixane Lechemia at 8:30 a.m.
Duke's doubles pair of senior Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Alyssa Smith also reached the round of 16 following a round of 64 bye and an 8-6 win over Winthrop's Alice Garcia and Tijana Uzelac. Goldfeld and Smith are scheduled to meet Liza Fieldsend and Sophie Nelson of NC State Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Freshman Christina Makarova made her college debut Thursday, teaming with senior Annie Mulholland in doubles play. Makarova and Mulholland dropped a tight match against NC State's Natalia Janowcz and Joanna Nalborska, 8-5. Mulholland returns to competition in singles play Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Kahan, Goldfeld, Mulholland, Smith and Smaller all resume competition Friday, taking the courts for the singles main draw.
