TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore Josh Levine and freshman TJ Pura each claimed first round singles victories on the opening day of pre-qualifying action at the 2013 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa. Participants were originally slated to complete two rounds of play Saturday, but rain forced the event indoors.
Pura kicked off the morning with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over UMBC's Alexander Drean to set up a second-round meeting with 22nd-seeded Tommy Bennett of Rice. Meanwhile Levine topped Penn State's Michael Reilly by scores of 6-2, 6-4 to also earn a spot in Sunday's second round.
Redshirt junior Cale Hammond took the first set against Marc Collado Castells of Penn State but ultimately fell in a tough three-set decision, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1. In one of the final matches of the evening, sophomore Daniel McCall was defeated by LSU's Justin Butsch, 6-2, 6-1.
Levine and Pura will continue in pre-qualifying play Sunday for the chance to advance to the qualifying stage of the singles tournament.
