DURHAM, N.C. - Former Duke standout Kenny Dennard will be honored as one of 12 members of the 2012 class of Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Legends announced on Tuesday by Commissioner John Swofford.
Dennard, a 6-7 forward from King, N.C., lettered four seasons at Duke from 1977-81 and finished his career with 1,057 points which at the time ranked 20th on Duke's all-time list. He helped lead Duke to ACC titles in 1978 and 1980 and to three NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the national championship in 1978.
Dennard started 115 games during his career and played for head coaches Bill Foster and Mike Krzyzewski. A co-captain on Krzyzewski's first Duke team in 1980-81, Dennard posted a 90-33 record during his tenure and an 8-2 record in the ACC Tournament. As a freshman during the 1978 ACC tournament, he averaged 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds as the Blue Devils defeated Clemson 83-72, Maryland 81-69 and Wake Forest 85-77. After the ACC Championship run, Dennard and the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Championship game where they fell 94-88 to No. 1 Kentucky.
Dennard holds Duke's single-game steals record with the 11 he picked off on Feb. 3, 1979 against Maryland. He remains the only player in Duke history to record double-digit steals in a game.
Joining Dennard in the ACC Legends class are John Bagley (Boston College), Sharone Wright (Clemson), James Collins (Florida State), Malcolm Mackey (Georgia Tech), Johnny Rhodes (Maryland), Ron Godfrey (Miami), Todd Fuller (NC State), Kenny Smith (North Carolina), Lee Raker (Virginia), Dale Solomon (Virginia Tech) and Randolph Childress (Wake Forest).
