Team Notes:
• Duke fell to 15-3 all-time against Miami in a series that began in 1962. The loss was Duke's first to Miami in nine meetings in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils have won 11 of the 13 meetings since the Hurricanes joined the ACC and are 15-2 against Miami under Coach K.
• Duke played its first overtime game since Feb. 7, 2009. That game was also against Miami in Cameron Indoor Stadium, and Duke won 78-75. Today's overtime loss was Duke's first since a 65-64 loss to Pittsburgh on Dec. 20, 2007.
• Duke is 4-3 when playing on Super Bowl Sunday. Duke played on the same day as the NFL's championship game in 1979, 1990, 1996, 1997, 2007 and 2009.
• After a 19-6 Miami run over the final 7:52 of the first half, Duke went into halftime trailing 42-28 marking only the sixth time this season that Duke trailed at the break. The Blue Devils are 3-3 this season when losing at the half. The 14-point halftime deficit was the second largest of the season and Duke's largest at home since a 14-point deficit on Feb. 9, 2011 against North Carolina.
• The Blue Devils trailed by as many as 16 points, but rallied to overcome that deficit and take a 66-65 lead with 2:49 remaining in the game.
• The Blue Devils, trailing 48-32 with 15:59 remaining in their largest deficit of the game, embarked on an 18-7 run over the next 6:37 to close the deficit to 55-53.
Seth Curry keyed the rally by sinking three three-pointers (in four attempts) while also picking off two steals and hauling in two rebounds, including one on the offensive end.
• Duke took only three free throws in the first half.
• The Blue Devils had two 20-point scorers for the third time this season with
Seth Curry leading the way with 22 and
Austin Rivers scoring 20. It was Duke's first loss in a game in which two players scored 20 points since March 5, 2011 against North Carolina (81-67) when
Nolan Smith (30) and Curry (20) both reached 20 points.
• Duke got 40 points from its bench, thanks to the production of Curry (22 points),
Quinn Cook (8 points) and
Ryan Kelly (8 points). Duke has gotten at least 40 points from its bench three times this season. Kelly leads all Duke players with 123 points off the bench (13.7 per game).
• Duke attempted a season-high 31 three-pointers, its most since taking 35 on Jan. 12, 2011.
Player Notes:
Quinn Cook
• Scored eight points and dished out four assists off the bench.
• Recorded just one turnover to increase his assist-to-turnover ratio to 3.43:1 for the season. Cook is on pace to break Duke's freshman assist-to-turnover ratio record of 2.85:1 held by Chris Duhon (2000-01).
Seth Curry
• Matched a career high with 22 points for his third 20-point game of the season. Curry led Duke in scoring for the fourth time this year.
• Curry scored 17 points in the second half, going 5-of-7 from the floor, 3-of-4 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. He also picked off three steals and added an assist in the second half.
• Scored nine points with three three-pointers during a 5:42 span in the second half. Curry went 3-of-4 from the three-point line during that run to help Duke turn a 13-point deficit into a four-point game. He also picked off two steals and pulled in two rebounds during Duke's 18-7 run.
• Put Duke ahead 66-65 by hitting a long-range jumper with 2:49 remaining. It was Duke's first lead since the 8:15 mark in the first half.
• Scored in double figures for the 14th time this season.
• Extended his free throw streak to 18 consecutive makes before missing two in a row in overtime. Curry had not missed a free throw since Jan. 19 against Wake Forest. He leads the ACC with a .870 free throw percentage.
Josh Hairston
• Made his second straight start and played 13 minutes.
• Contributed two points, two offensive rebounds and a block. Hairston has more offensive rebounds (22) than defensive rebounds (14) this season. His 22 offensive rebounds are the fourth most on the team despite averaging just 9.0 minutes per game.
Ryan Kelly
• Hit a pair of three-point field goals and finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
• Had multiple blocks for the seventh time this season. Recorded both blocks in the second half.
Mason Plumlee
• Made his 44th consecutive start. Duke is 36-8 during that 44-game streak.
• Hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds for his team-leading 11th double-digit rebounding game of the season. Plumlee has led Duke in rebounding 17 times.
• Has now grabbed 12 or more rebounds in a game 10 times this season.
Austin Rivers
• Tied the game with a free throw with 21.1 seconds remaining in regulation. That basket was his 20th point of the game for his team-leading fifth 20-point game of the year. Rivers has scored in double figures a team-high 19 times this year and leads Duke with 14.5 points per game. The last freshman to lead Duke in scoring was
Johnny Dawkins in 1983.
• Converted a key three-point play with 4:03 remaining in the second half to cut the deficit to 65-64. Rivers drove from the three-point line to the basket and dropped in a layup in traffic. He took the foul from Malcolm Grant during the play and then sank the free throw for his 19th point of the game.
• Played a career-high 43 minutes, missing just two minutes of court time. Rivers leads all ACC freshmen in minutes per game, averaging 31.5 per contest. His 43 minutes played is tied for the eighth most by a freshman at Duke.
