DURHAM, N.C. – The Women's Professional Soccer league ended its season on Saturday as the Western New York Flash and 2006 Duke alum Rebecca Moros defeated the Philadelphia Independence for the WPS Championship.
The Flash and Independence battled all season for the No. 1 spot until the Flash prevailed in the championship match at a packed Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester, N.Y., defeating Philadelphia 5-4 on penalties. After the first nine shooters converted on penalty kicks, the Flash goalkeeper Ashley Harris stopped Philadelphia's Laura del Rio's shot to take the win, marking the Flash with a 13-2-3 record for the season. Christine Sinclair gave the Flash the lead in the 64th minute, only to have Philadelphia's' Amy Rodriguez tie it up before time ran out in the 83rd minute.
The Duke alum started off the 2011 season with magicJack before signing with the Flash on July 7. After her first game with the Flash on July 9, Moros earned a starting position, starting in 11 of 12 contests
“The quality of the individuals is something special," commented Moros in an espnW article. "I've never played with such skillful players, such intelligent players. Everyone on this team was really team-first. This team welcomed me, and I've had a great time since I've been here."
Moros, a right back defender for the Flash, recorded the first shot in the championship match against the tough Independence defense from 22 yards out. The former Blue Devil ended the season with three shots and two shots-on-goal in 1,098 minutes played.
