DURHAM, N.C.— Prior to heading home following the second session of summer school, GoDuke.com caught up with Duke women's basketball sophomore
Tricia Liston to chat about her summer, what she has been working on and how the team is coming together.
Liston, who is a native of River Forest, Ill., started two of 32 contests as a rookie with the Blue Devils last season. She averaged 5.5 points and 2.1 rebounds on the year. Liston was deadly from three-point range as she hit 28 treys and had a 38.9 three-point field goal percentage.
Duke returns eight letterwinners and welcomes the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the nation for the second straight year under Head Coach
Joanne P. McCallie in 2011-12. The Blue Devils posted a 32-4 overall record last season, won the ACC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
GoDuke.com: How has everything gone in the second session of summer school?
Tricia Liston: It was good. Workouts were good. It was nice having the freshmen here. I know how much that helped when we were here early. It was good, we worked hard. We did a lot of things in the weight room and also doing agilities with the baseball team was cool. We have never done that before and I think that really helped.
GoDuke.com: After having a year under your belt, how much do you think you've learned or improved since your freshmen year?
TL: I think having that one year under my belt was huge for me. Especially just the transition from high school to college as well as just being in a new program with a new coach and new players and everything you kind of have to learn the ropes and everything. I think this year is going to be a lot better for me because of having the experience that I had last year with the leadership from the seniors as well as going through certain experiences.
GoDuke.com: What was the Durham Pro Am experience like this summer?
TL: It's fun. We were undefeated and played for the championship. It's fun being able to play on the same team as girls you play against, mix and matching and playing against all the local people. The environment is cool with everyone watching, so it's been fun.
GoDuke.com: What have you been able to work on since you've been here?
TL: Fundamentals like ball handling, getting better with that, as well as my shooting. But, then also defense and agility, foot work, quickness and all that kind of stuff as well as conditioning.
GoDuke.com: How is everyone meshing together this summer?
TL: I think it's been good. Everybody has been stepping up at different points and playing that leadership role that the three seniors had before. And also I think that the freshmen are doing well and starting to fit in and know what its like to be in college and the different workouts.
GoDuke.com: Do you have anything on your agenda for the next couple weeks before you come back for full time school?
TL: I think just maintaining all the stuff now that we've been working on in the summer. Then moving forward with everything, like conditioning and especially keeping that up when we go home for when we come back. Also basketball stuff --keeping up with it, getting in the gym and shooting and using the gun and all that.
GoDuke.com: Did you have any true summer time this summer?
TL: Yeah, me and my family went to Bermuda and we all go to go for a week and that was really fun.
GoDuke.com: How was Bermuda?
TL: It was nice, we got a lot of sun and there was good weather. Me and my sisters went kayaking. It was just nice being away with my family, just us.
GoDuke.com: How was Camp Kaleidoscope this summer and being able to impact someone's life?
TL: I think that that's always really cool. Especially because we knew a few people from last year, so just seeing them smile and they are so excited to see us. It makes you feel good that you are helping them and making their summer better, making their day better. I liked it.
