DURHAM, N.C.-- In the last minutes of the Regional IV Championship game on Sunday, June 26 versus Idaho's Super Nova (91-92) my Real Colorado team scored two goals to clinch the Regional Championship. After the emotional 4-3 victory, I had a 12-hour drive back to Colorado to come down from cloud nine and start preparing for my European trip that was less than 36 hours away.
In 13 days, my family and I traveled between London (five days), Florence (five days), and Rome (three days). We journeyed across the pond to visit my sister, Laura, an upcoming senior at the University of Kansas, who has an internship with ESPN America in London this summer.
London consisted of our own personnel “inexperienced” tour guide in Laura and seeing some of the big sites of London such as the Crown Jewels, Big Ben, and my personal favorite, Westminster Abbey, where just two months before, to the day, Prince William and Princess Kate were married. The one complaint I have about London would have to be the food. It was all pub food.
However, I was able to quickly forget about London's disappointment when I had my first Italian meal. We started off in Florence, which was by far my favorite trip. We spent five nights in a villa with our personal chef who only spoke Italian along with five days visiting museums -- including Accademia, which holds Michelangelo's David statue, wineries in the Chianti region, and lounging around the villa's pool.
We finished our trip in Rome visiting the Vatican, Pantheon, and Coliseum, which I ran around on our last morning like a local. Considering I may never get the chance to do that again, it was inspiring. Personally, seeing Michelangelo's work was humbling especially in the Sistine Chapel. I would argue that his work would rival any modern day artist's, if not win.
Although I am having withdrawals from the Italian food and am regretful that I didn't make the short trip to Germany to watch the Women's National Team play Brazil, I must say I am happy to be home!
Less than 1 week until my Real team and I head to Nationals, where I can't wait to see my Duke teammates
Natasha Anasi,
Avery Rape, and
Gilda Doria. Less than two weeks until I am back at Duke for my preseason physical!
