Coach K Receives Naismith Good Sportsmanship Award

RALEIGH, N.C. - Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski along with longtime North Carolina coach Dean Smith and the late Kay Yow were honored with the Dr. James A. Naismith Good Sportsmanship Award at the Progress Energy Center's Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday. The trio of Hall of Fame coaches has combined for more than 2,500 victories in their careers.
"Tonight is a great celebration of basketball," said Krzyzewski. "For Kay, Dean, and myself to be honored on the same night it is one of those really special nights. It's an honor for me to be a part of this."
Krzyzewski enters his 37th season as a head coach with 900 wins -- two shy of matching Bob Knight for the most by a Division I men's coach. Smith retired in 1997 as the record-holder with 879 wins. Yow, who died in 2009 after a two-decade fight with cancer, won 737 games during her career.
The Naismith Good Sportsmanship Award was established in 1998 to honor individuals for sportsmanship, positive contributions to the game and a lifelong dedication to the sport. Past recipients include Red Auerbach, Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson, Pat Summitt, Jerry West and John Wooden.
