ATHENS, Ga. - The Blue Devil women's golf team charged back in Sunday's final round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic with a seven-under-par, 281, to move up to tied for second place at the 6,335-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course.
Duke finished with rounds of 291, 296 and 281 for a total of 868. The Blue Devils finished eight shots behind Alabama (860), while Duke (868), Purdue (868), Arkansas (869), Florida (870), Auburn (871), Georgia (871), Notre Dame (872), Wake Forest (876) and Michigan State (878) closed out the top 10. Duke opened the round on hole No. 4 as everyone started with a shotgun start.
"The tournament was a lot of fun because everyone was in a five-some together," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "So obviously we saw every shot that every player hit. It was especially fun the last day because we were able to shoot seven under as a team and there were many birdies coming from everyone. The weather got a little better so it made it a little easier to get birdies the last day. It was nice to be out in the sun, feeling warm and shooting a few birdies."
Blue Devil freshman Laetitia Beck closed her weekend with a team-best three-under-par, 69, and moved up to tied for third place overall with a total of 217. A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck opened her day with six straight pars before suffering her lone bogey of the round. She played her final 11 holes at four-under-par on her way to finishing with a 69. Beck rolled 26 putts, while hitting 12 greens and 10 fairways on the day.
Taking the individual title was Marta Silva Zamora of Georgia with a four-under-par, 212. Emily Tubert of Arkansas was second with a two-under-par, 214.
Scoring for the tournament was different than normal as all five competitors from each school played together, which is designed to promote a better "team" atmosphere. A team's score for each hole was determined by the low four scores on that hole. The individual champion was still determined as the player with the best relation-to-par score over the 54 holes.
After leading the first day with a two-under-par, 70, freshman Alejandra Cangrejo closed with a 73 to finish tied for 15th with a 224. She opened her round on fire with two birdies over her first four holes, but had a bogey on her fifth and a double-bogey on her ninth hole before totaling five consecutive pars. Cangrejo, who is from Bogota, Columbia, fired a birdie on No. 18 to move back to even par but a bogey on her final hole of the day led to the 73. She had 26 putts, 13 fairways hit and nine greens-in-regulation.
Sophomore Stacey Kim also finished with the best round of her weekend with a 74 as she climbed to tied for 54th with a three-day ledger of 230. A native of Columbus, Ga., Kim opened with back-to-back bogies and then went to three-over-par with a bogey on her sixth hole. She regrouped to get hot with four birdies over a span of seven holes to move to one-under-par. Kim closed with a double-bogey, par and bogey over her final three holes to finish with a 74. She hit 13 greens, 10 fairways and had 31 putts on the day.
With another strong finish on Sunday was sophomore Courtney Ellenbogen, who posted a 75 on her way to finishing tied for 78th. After posting only one birdie over her first 36 holes, Ellenbogen turned in five on Sunday in the final round. Her three double-bogeys is what led to trouble for the Blacksburg, Va., product as she had 26 putts, hit nine greens and 11 fairways.
Coming off being named ACC Golfer of the Month for March, sophomore Lindy Duncan struggled with a career-worst tied for 78th placement with a total of 234. She closed with an 80 on Sunday. Duncan couldn't get her putter going on Sunday as she finished with 36 putts to go along with 10 greens-in-regulation and 10 fairways hit. A Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native, Duncan was held without a birdie to close out the weekend.
As a team, Duke rolled in a total of 16 birdies on Sunday. This came a day after turning in only three birdies in the second round. The Blue Devils played the entire tournament without senior Kim Donovan as she was suffering from the flu.
"It was nice to have contribution from everybody in the lineup [this week]," said Brooks. We were able to finish second without our senior [Kim Donovan] in the lineup and I think that is good. Kim will be back in there for the conference tournament. I just think we haven't gotten everybody firing at the same time yet -- all three days. If we can do that, we are going to be a real good team. I think we can accomplish a lot once we can get everyone firing. With a little bit more help from the bottom -- four and five spots, which we got today -- you will really get to see what this team is capable of."
Duke will next kick off the postseason with the ACC Championship from April 15-17 at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
