DURHAM, N.C. - Duke senior
Nolan Smith was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year on Tuesday as announced by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Smith leads the ACC in scoring while also ranking among the league leaders in assists, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and minutes played.
Smith, a unanimous first team All-ACC selection, received 73 of 75 votes in becoming the first Blue Devil since J.J. Redick in 2006 to win conference player of the year honors. He is the 12th Duke player (14 honors) overall and the eighth player (10 honors) under Coach K to earn ACC Player of the Year accolades.
Smith, a National Player of the Year candidate, enters the ACC Tournament tied for 11th in the NCAA in scoring at 21.6 points per game. He is one of three players in the country averaging over 20.0 points and 5.0 assists per game. Smith has reached double-figures in scoring in 30 of 31 games with ACC highs in 20-point games (18) and 30-point games (4).
Duke, ranked fifth in the AP Poll and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, opens ACC Tournament play on Friday, March 11 at 7pm. The Blue Devils face the winner of Thursday's tilt between Maryland and N.C. State. Duke has won the last two ACC Championships and nine of the last 12 league titles.
