Saturday's regular season finale marked the sixth time that Duke and North Carolina have played at the end of the year to decide the ACC regular season championship. Four of the six games have been played in Chapel Hill with the Tar Heels winning three of the four.
Coach K is now 35-36 all-time against North Carolina. The Blue Devils are 11-15 against the Tar Heels in the Dean E. Smith Center.
The game also decided another point in the Battle of the Blues presented by Continental Tire, a season-long competition between Duke and North Carolina. North Carolina now leads 11-5.
The loss ended a winning streak of 30 consecutive games when playing in the state of North Carolina. Duke had not lost in the state since the middle of last season at N.C. State.
North Carolina was the fifth ranked opponent for the Blue Devils this season and first ranked team to defeat the Blue Devils. They are now 4-1 on the year.
The Tar Heels tallied season highs for opponents against Duke in first half points (51) and made field goals (33).
Duke trailed at the half for just the sixth time this season. They are now 2-4 when trailing after the first 20 minutes of play. The Blue Devils have been down by 10 or more points in three of those six games, including both games against North Carolina. They were down 43-29 in the first meeting.
The 51 points scored by North Carolina in the first half were the most allowed in a half by the Blue Devils this season and second time an opponent has scored 50 or more in a half. N.C. State had 50 points in the second half on Jan. 19. St. John's had the previous high for a first half with 46 points on Jan. 30.
North Carolina shot 52.4 percent for the game, marking just the second time this season a Duke opponent shot 50 percent for the game. The other was St. John's (.582). It was the sixth time an opponent shot 50 percent or better against Duke in the first half and highest field goal percentage allowed. St. John's shot 57.1 percent in the first half en route to a 21-point halftime lead.
Outside of Seth Curry, Duke was 0-for-16 from behind the three-point line. Curry made 6-of-11 in the game.
Duke recorded nine turnovers, marking the 12th time this season they have had 10 or fewer turnovers.
Sophomore Seth Curry recorded his third career 20-point game with two of the three coming against North Carolina. He had 20 in this game after scoring 22 in the first meeting in Durham. He reached double figures in scoring for the 13th time this season.
Curry set a career high with six made three-point field goals, breaking his previous best of five against Boston College. He has made three or more in three of the last four games and 10 overall contests this year.
Sophomore Mason Plumlee had nine rebounds, giving him nine or more in four of the last six games. He finished with 155 rebounds in conference play, an average of 9.7 rebounds per game.
Senior Kyle Singler made his team-leading 99th consecutive start and extended his school record to 141 career starts. His 142 career games played ranks seventh most at Duke.
He played all 40 minutes for the sixth time this season and passed Tommy Amaker for sixth most on Duke's career minutes played list.
With his eight points he passed Phil Ford of North Carolina for 11th on the ACC career scoring charts and now has 2,297 career points.
He failed to reach double figures in scoring for just the third time this season.
Senior Nolan Smith finished with 30 points for his fourth career game with 30 or more points. All four 30-point games came this season.
Smith notched his ACC-leading 18th game with 20 or more points and now has 35 career 20-point outings. He reached double figures in scoring for the 30th time in 31 games this season. He has 89 career games with 10 or more points.
In two games against North Carolina, Smith tallied 64 total points with a career-high 34 in the first meeting and 30 tonight.
Smith was 12-of-13 from the free throw line, one made free throw shy of a career high. It was his third career game with 10 or more made free throws.
He played all 40 minutes, the fifth time he has played all 40 minutes this season.
