CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 win over Boston College on Friday afternoon to extend its winning streak to six matches and remain unbeaten in conference play.
"We played a good all around match against a scrappy Boston College team,” said women's head coach Jamie Ashworth. “The conditions weren't great and we didn't adapt as well as I would have liked. It's a tough place to play and next time we are in a situation like that our adaptability has to be better. I'm happy we got through the match but we need to be a mentally stronger team when we play at Maryland on Sunday."
Duke (14-2, 3-0 ACC) claimed the doubles point for the sixth match in a row after dropping the doubles point in its five previous matches.
Ellah Nze and Rachel Kahan picked up the first of three doubles wins for the Blue Devils by a score of 8-1 over Alex Kelleher and Ina Kauppila, and the senior duo of Elizabeth Plotkin and Reka Zsilinszka clinched the doubles point for Duke with an 8-4 win over Katarina Gajic and Katharine Attwell.
Nadine Fahoum and Hanna Mar won the third doubles match to give the Blue Devils the sweep in doubles. Fahoum and Mar picked up the win by a score of 8-7(3) over Veronica Corning and Erina Kikuchi.
In singles action, the Blue Devils claimed five out of six matches en route to the 6-1 win. Once again Mary Clayton was first off the court for Duke with her sixth straight win. Clayton took down Ina Kauppila on court six 6-2, 6-0, while Nze cruised to a 6-1, 6-0, win on court two over Kikuchi to give Duke an early 3-0 lead.
Kahan clinched the match for Duke from the number five spot with a straight set decision over Attwell - 6-3, 6-2 - and remains undefeated at 14-0. With the win, Kahan increased her match win streak to 16 straight and is 3-0 in conference matches.
With three matches remaining, Duke went on to win two out of the final three. Plotkin extended her winning streak to nine matches with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(2), win over Corning, while Fahoum took down Kelleher on court one in three sets by a score of 1-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(12).
The Eagles notched their only point in the match when Gajic downed Zsilinszka by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(11), that put an end to Zsilinszka's six-match win streak.
The Blue Devils will look to remain undefeated on the road when they take No. 24 Maryland on Sunday, March 27, at 12 p.m.
