DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 10 Duke men's tennis team swept Wake Forest 7-0, in its ACC opener on Friday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Duke won two out of three doubles matches and swept singles, with all six matches being decided in straight sets.
In doubles action, Duke (10-6, 1-0 ACC) and Wake Forest battled back and forth, as the Blue Devils won two out of three matches to claim the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
The Demon Deacons took the first of three doubles matches as Danny Kreman and Jonathan Wolff picked up an 8-5 win over
David Holland and
Chris Mengel on court two, while the No. 4 duo of
Henrique Cunha and
Reid Carleton came back from being down 2-0 against Tripper Carleton and Iain Atkinson to earn an 8-6 win to even things at one apiece in doubles.
Duke won the doubles point on court three when
Fred Saba and
Torsten Wietoska fought back from a 3-4 deficit, and won five straight points to pick up an 8-4 victory over David Hopkins and Adam Lee, that gave the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The Blue Devils carried over their momentum from doubles into singles, as they won the first set in all six matches.
Fred Saba was first off the courts for Duke with a 6-3, 6-4, straight set win over Atkinson, while
Luke Marchese took down Hopkins on court six 6-3, 6-0 to give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead.
Cunha clinched the match win for Duke on court one with the third straight set victory in a row over T. Carleton 6-3, 6-1. With three matches remaining on courts two, three and five, the Blue Devils went on to win all three matches and earned the sweep.
Jared Pinsky was the fourth player off the courts with another straight set win over Lee, 6-3, 6-4, while Mengel finished off Kreyman 6-3, 6-3. In the final match of the day R. Carleton took down Wolff, 6-2, 6-4, that sealed the sweep over the Demon Deacons.
Up next, Duke will host cross-town rival N.C. State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, at Ambler Tennis Stadium. Admission is free to the public, and live stats and live video will be provided by GoDuke.com.
