Duke won its ACC-leading 19th ACC Championship and has now won three straight and 10 of the last 13 ACC titles. It was the 13th ACC Championship under head coach Mike Krzyzewski as he is now 13-5 (.722) in the finals of the ACC Tournament. The three straight championships is tied for the second longest streak in league history. Duke holds the record with five straight titles from 1999-2003.
The win was the 30th of the season for the Blue Devils, who have won at least 30 games in three straight seasons. It is the 12th 30-win season in school history with all 12 coming under Coach K. It is just the sixth time in NCAA history a program has won 30 or more games in three straight seasons. They are the fifth program to do so with Kentucky doing it twice (1947-49 and 1996-98) and Montana State (1927-29), UCLA (2006-08) and North Carolina (2007-09) also accomplishing the feat.
The Blue Devils made their 30th ACC Championship appearance in school history on Sunday. It is the fourth time they have won the tournament as a No. 2 seed (1978, 2001, 2002, 2010). Duke has a winning record against all 11 current ACC schools in the tournament.
Nolan Smith became the 18th Duke player to be named ACC Tournament MVP, which ties Duke with North Carolina for the most tournament MVP honors. Smith averaged 18.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Joining Smith on the ACC All-Tournament first team was Kyle Singler. Duke also placed Seth Curry and Miles Plumlee on the second team.
Sunday's championship game was the 11th time Duke and North Carolina have met in the ACC Tournament finals. Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is now 5-3 in his eight games against the Tar Heels for the conference title. It was the first meeting in the finals since 2001 (Duke, 79-53) and first in the tournament since the 2003 semifinals (Duke, 84-77). The Blue Devils have won five straight ACC Tournament games against North Carolina and are 12-8 all-time.
Duke has now won nine straight ACC Tournament games in Greensboro and have also won nine straight overall with championships in each of the last three seasons. The Blue Devils have won a record 90 ACC Tournament games all-time and are 36-15 when playing in Greensboro.
Since 1999 Coach K is 7-0 in the ACC Tournament when playing teams the Blue Devils lost to in the regular season. Duke avenged regular season losses to Virginia Tech and North Carolina in this year's ACC Tournament. Coach K is 16-10 all-time in the ACC Tournament when playing teams Duke lost to in the regular season.
Sunday marked the 42nd meeting between Duke and North Carolina where both teams were ranked in the top 10.
Head coach Mike Krzyzewski earned his 52nd career ACC Tournament win and is now 52-17 all-time. He is one of only two coaches in conference history with at least 50 tournament victories, joining North Carolina's Dean Smith (58). Since 1998, Duke is 35-4 in the ACC Tournament.
When playing in the Greensboro Coliseum, Duke is now 42-9 under Coach K with victories in 15 straight contests dating back to the 2004 ACC Championship game.
The Blue Devils have won 20 straight neutral site games dating back to a loss to Villanova in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
Over the last three seasons the Blue Devils have collected 95 overall victories which ranks tied for third most over a three-year span in school history.
Duke shot 50 percent for the game and has shot 50 percent or better in 12 games this season and is 12-0 in those contests. They shot 62.1 percent from the field in the first half, marking the sixth time this season they have shot 60 percent or better in a half.
In the first two meetings with North Carolina, the Blue Devils trailed by double digits at the half. The third time around Duke turned the tables and took a 42-28 lead into halftime. Duke is 27-0 when leading at the half this year.
Senior Kyle Singler set a new school record with his 145th consecutive game played, passing the 144 straight that Chris Duhon and Jon Scheyer played. Singler's 145 career games played ranks fourth most at Duke. Singler made his 102nd consecutive start and extended his school record to 144 career starts.
His 11 career starts in the ACC Tournament is tied for fourth most in Duke history with Shane Battier.
He has scored in double figures in 31 of the 34 games this year and has 126 career games with at least 10 points.
With his 11 points he ends up ranked seventh at Duke for career points in ACC Tournament play with 179 points.
Singler also finished tied for the Duke ACC Tournament free throw percentage record, making 90 percent (45-of-50) in his four seasons.
He played 39 minutes to move past Jon Scheyer into third on Duke's career minutes played list. He has played 4,792 career minutes.
The victory gives him 123 for his career, moving him into a tie for second most in ACC history with Chris Duhon and Danny Green of North Carolina.
Senior Nolan Smith scored at least 20 points for the 20th time this season and 37th career game. He had at least 20 points in both the semifinals against Virginia Tech (27) and championship game against North Carolina (20). He reached double figures in scoring for the 32nd time in 34 games this season.
Smith recorded his first career double-double with 20 points and 10 assists.
The 10 assists matched a career high for Smith. He also had 10 against Bradley earlier this season. The 10 assists also match the fourth most in an ACC Tournament game by a Duke player.
He was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line in the game, the seventh time this season he has had five or more attempts without a miss.
With two steals he recorded his 12th multi-steal contest.
