DURHAM, N.C. – With a 66-58 victory over 13th-ranked North Carolina on Sunday evening, the ninth-ranked Duke women's basketball team clinched a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Regular Season Championship and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2011 ACC Championship.
The championship will begin on Thursday, March 3 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C., with four first round games. Duke, who enters postseason action with a 26-3 overall and 12-2 league mark, will take on the winner of the No. 8 seed Virginia (16-14) versus No. 9 seed Wake Forest (14-16) on Friday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m.
Duke clinched its second straight ACC Regular Season title under the direction of Head Coach
Joanne P. McCallie. The title was shared along with Miami, who is coached by Duke graduate Katie Meier. It marks the first time since the 2003-04 and 2004-05 campaigns that the Blue Devils posted back-to-back ACC Regular Season titles. The title is also the 10th in school history.
As the Blue Devils prepare to defend their ACC Tournament Championship from a year ago, Duke has won six overall ACC Championships in school history -- 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2010.
Duke's game on Friday will be aired live on RSN-TV -- Fox Sports Net South (FSNS), ComCast Sports Net (CSN), Fox Sports Net Florida (FSNFL), New England Sports Network (NESN).
The 2011 ACC Women's Tournament will mark the 12th consecutive year the Coliseum has played host to the event. Last year, the tournament set a new single-game attendance record in the opening round's School Day game with a crowd of 11,445 that featured approximately 7,800 elementary students, nearly 2,000 more than the year before.
Tickets are available and may be obtained by calling the Duke Ticket Office at (919) 681-2583 or toll free at (877) 375-3853.
