GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Lance Thomas scored a team-high 14 points to lead Team USA to a 94-92 win over Dominican Republic in the bronze medal game at the 2011 Pan-American Games.
Thomas shot 5-for-10 from the field and hit all four free throws as Team USA edged the Dominican Republic 26-24 in the fourth quarter.
Team USA led 51-47 at halftime, but the Dominican Republic rallied for 23 points in the third quarter to tie the score at 68-68. The Dominican Republic had a chance to win the game with a three-pointer at the buzzer, but Thomas guarded shooter Francisco Ozuna well enough to alter his shot, which missed it mark and rebounded into Team USA's possession.
"It was a tough game, it was a slow start, it was a really early game but we fought," said Thomas, who finished fourth in the tournament in rebounds. " The Dominican Republic definitely had a chip on their shoulder because they lost a close game last night and lost to us earlier in the tournament in another close game, so we knew they weren't going to lie down against us. It was a close game throughout the and just for us to find a way to close it out in the end together like we did the first time we played them was amazing."
For the tournament, Thomas averaged 8.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Twenty of his 38 rebounds came on the offensive end.
The bronze medal showing by the USA was the U.S. men's first media in a Pan American Games since 1999 when that team also won silver. The Americans have now earned a medal in 13 of their 16 Pan Am Games appearances, including a record eight golds, as well as three silvers and two bronze. The U.S. men own an 87-15 (.851 winning percentage) all-time mark at the Pan Am Games.
