CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Blue Devils began day four at the ITA Carolina Regionals with three players remaining in the singles main draw and two doubles tandems remaining. After a long day of competition, Duke advanced one pair from the doubles main draw into Monday's semifinal match, despite two players falling in the semifinals in singles.
The day kicked off with doubles action, as freshmen Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfeld continued their charge through the field with an impressive 8-3 victory over North Carolina's Laura Slater and Jennifer Stone in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Hanna Mar and freshman Monica Turewicz were not as fortunate, as they fell, 8-3, to Wake Forest's Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert.
In singles play, junior Mary Clayton picked up a walkover quarterfinal win after fellow teammate and opponent Turewicz withdrew due to illness. Clayton then dropped her semifinal matchup to Clemson's Nelly Ciolkowski, 6-3, 6-2.
Mar also took to the court and downed N.C. State's Joelle Kissell in a long, three-set battle. Mar lost the first set 6-3, but fought back to win the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-4. The win advanced the Burr Ridge, Ill. native into the semifinals where she faced off with North Carolina's Lauren McHale, but McHale came out victorious, outlasting Mar, 6-2, 6-3.
On Monday, Capra and Goldfeld will open the day with a semifinal doubles match against Wake Forest's Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert. Duncan and Talbert are seeded second in the draw and ranked No. 7, nationally. The doubles final will also be played shortly after the conclusion of both semifinal matches.
