DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's tennis team will compete in the ITA Carolina Regional Championships this weekend, beginning on Thursday Oct. 20 and continuing through Monday Oct. 24, in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Blue Devils will be competing for a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7, in Flushing, N.Y.
Six Blue Devils will compete in singles play, including Monica Gorny, Mary Clayton, Hanna Mar, and newcomers Ester Goldfeld, Annie Mulholland and Monica Turewicz. Duke's entries will not compete in the qualifying rounds of the singles draw, but will compete in the main draw once qualifiers have concluded.
Freshman Beatrice Capra will compete in doubles only, after earning an automatic bid to the indoor championships after advancing to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
Head coach Jamie Ashworth emphasized the importance of doubles play as a key point if Duke hopes to succeed this weekend.
"We start play each day with doubles, so setting the tone for the day with some of our doubles is important," said Ashworth. "We have a couple new combinations we want to get a look at."
Ashworth will be trying new doubles combinations this weekend in hopes of finding additional or alternative pairs heading forward.
"Our goal at the beginning of the fall was, by the end of this tournament, to have an idea of what we would do for doubles teams as we move toward January and dual matches."
A junior, Clayton also has a positive outlook on the upcoming weekend and will be one of several Blue Devils competing with a new doubles partner.
'"I'm really looking forward to playing with Annie [Mulholland]," said Clayton. "We've been practicing really well, and I'm excited about it. This is our third tournament so obviously it will be nice to see the results from the pairings."
In doubles, Duke will send three pairs to the courts beginning on Friday after each duo received byes through Thursday's first round. Seeded third in the draw, the freshman duo of Capra and Goldfeld will meet Winthrop's Ekin Gunaysu and Camille Amrani, who also received a first round bye, while Clayton and Mulholland will take on the winner of Furman's Alex Moreno and Katherine Oudin and Winthrop's Gio Portiolli and Sandra Herrera. Mar and Turewicz will match up against the victor of Thursday's first round match between East Carolina's Natalie Collins and Yilian Zhang and Coastal Carolina's Dominique de Whit and Amanda Malatek.
Ashworth will have the chance to learn a little more about his players and the team as a whole at the conclusion of the weekend, and looks forward to watching the team make the most of the tournament.
"They're being judged against the teams that we're playing in our region, but also against each other. For some of them, it's a big opportunity this weekend."
If there is one key aspect the players will rely on to succeed this weekend, Coach Ashworth knows just what that is.
"A lot of communication. We've been stressing that. If we communicate well, then we should play well."
All matches are scheduled to be played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus.
