
Five Blue Devils Advance in Singles Tournament

The top-seeded duo of junior Henrique Cunha and sophomore Chris Mengel picked up two victories to advance to Sunday's semifinal round. Cunha and Mengel opened the day with an 8-3 win over East Carolina's Nicolas Soriano and Jonas Vliegen, and then edged Furman's Alex Christ and Joel Cook, 8-5, to set up a semifinal matchup with the seventh-seeded tandem of Danny Kreyman and Adam Lee from Wake Forest.
Senior David Holland and freshman Jason Tahir knocked off third-seeded Yannick Maden and Zac Rigsby of Clemson, 9-7, before falling to No. 7 seed Kreyman and Lee of Wake Forest in the quarterfinals, 9-7. The tandem of seniors Luke Marchese and Torsten Wietoska also went 1-1 on the day, defeating ninth-seeded Dominic Hodgson and Matt Thomson of NC State, 8-5, and suffering an 8-1 loss to second-seeded Brennan Boyajian and Joey Burkhardt of North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
Top-seed Cunha continued his run in the singles tournament, downing Adrien Langeard of UNC Asheville, 6-1, 6-0. Cunha moves to 7-2 on the fall with the victory, and will face the No. 16 seed, Nick Jones of South Carolina, in an 11 a.m. match on Sunday. Mengel, the No. 3 seed in the draw, posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over South Carolina's Chip Cox to also earn a spot in the round of 16.
Sophomore Cale Hammond will join Cunha and Mengel in the round of 16 after knocking off 13th-seeded Austin Powell of NC State in three sets. Powell claimed the first set, 6-0, but Hammond quickly recovered to win the next two sets by scores of 6-4 and 7-5. The victory moved Hammond to 6-4 in fall singles action and earned him a matchup Sunday at 9 a.m. with No. 4 seed Yannick Maden of Clemson.
Also advancing to the round of 16 was sophomore Fred Saba, the tournament's No. 6 seed. Saba defeated Peteris Vinogradovs of South Carolina State in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to set up a 9 a.m. match on Sunday against UNC Greensboro's Orcun Seyrek, the No. 10 seed. Meanwhile, Wietoska will face Wake Forest's David Hopkins in the round of 16 following a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over second-seeded Brennan Boyajian of North Carolina on Saturday.
Tahir, the No. 14 seed, fell to North Carolina's William Parker in the round of 32, 6-3, 6-1.
Play continues at the ITA Carolinas Regional on Sunday in Chapel Hill, beginning with the singles round of 16 and quarterfinals at 9 a.m. The semifinals of the doubles tournament will follow.
