Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski
On the team's shooting and leadership:
"When they've been working stuff on their own, we just told them to have a routine and settle down. I think a lot of them had routines. The big guys need to hit them. I thought they were shooting a lot - both Miles [Plumlee] and Mason [Plumlee]. Ryan [Kelly] should be an outstanding free-throw shooter. Ryan showed tonight more of what he did in China. Those three guys are going to be key to our basketball team. And Seth [Curry] should be a senior, so our older guys have to give consistently high performances."
On his coaching staff:
"I've been lucky here throughout my career. In the last decade, to have Chris [Collins] and Wojo [
Steve Wojciechowski]- they not only do this, they help me with the Olympics and the World Championships. And then to add Jeff [Capel] to that mix, I think we have really as good a coaching staff as there is - pro or college. You've got to give those guys an opportunity to use their talents."
On the play of the freshmen:
"Austin [Rivers] had a real spectacular first half. He turned it over a little bit too much in the second half. He's our one guy who can cross some help and recover situations, get another team in foul trouble, get us to the bonus early. I thought he did a good job. He was spectacular for a while. He's just got to adjust to the game, but he's strong with the ball. I thought Quinn [Cook] - remember he didn't play in China - was good. He did a nice job. Alex [Murphy] is just quietly efficient. He doesn't have to touch the ball, but he's playing good D. He had two big free throws and he didn't score a point, and then all of a sudden he's placed in a game-winning situation and he hits both free throws. Mike [Gbinije]'s doing a good job defensively. They can all help us - there's no question about that. We're going to need them to."
On the positions of Seth Curry and Austin Rivers:
"Seth is our starting guard. With his ability to score, you don't want him just handling the ball and being worn out or guarding the ball all the time. Tyler [Thornton] is a solid, solid basketball player. So he'll play too. We have depth and we've got to use it properly. It's not a five-man team. It's a deep team that doesn't have that first group established yet. We have two guys who averaged 18 points a game last year. There's not the differential - the separation. I could see different guys stepping up at different times. Hopefully somebody steps up during a ballgame. We're big and the offensive rebounding could be a huge factor for us. Miles [Plumlee] is playing great and he's so powerful. He seems in such a good place, he's talking out there. I'm really happy for him. He's put a lot of work in."
Duke Senior Miles Plumlee
"To have a good year, I've got to be aggressive and assert myself. I thought I came out strong, but there's a lot of things I can work on after this game and just keep getting better."
On the atmosphere of Countdown to Craziness:
"It was a lot of fun. Debbie [Krzyzewski] does an amazing job setting it up for us. It keeps growing and growing. Seeing the fans out there before, it was unreal. I felt like it was a real game. It was just so much fun and it was a great way to get us started for the season."
Duke Junior Seth Curry
"It was a lot of fun, especially being out there in front of the Cameron Crazies showing their excitement."
"Having so many young guys on the team this year, the coaches have really challenged me to be a vocal leader as much as I can and lead by example. I just tried to do that tonight. Our team kind of struggled at first, so we just had to pull out of that hole, and I was trying be the guy to get that going."
Duke Freshman Austin Rivers
On finally being at Duke and playing in Cameron for the first time:
It's crazy how time flies. I can think back to when Quinn [Cook] and I and the other recruits were sitting there watching the game, and now that we're there playing, it's crazy. I had a blast tonight, even though we did lose. Just playing with my teammates, you get to see where we're at. A lot of people stepped up."
"I'm a scorer. That's just one of the strongest aspects of my game. In the second half, I don't even know how to explain it. I just stopped being aggressive. It wasn't intentionally. It's just a thing that happened. They came at us and we were kind of lost. That's something you won't expect from me as the season goes on. I'm always going to be aggressive. That shouldn't happen, and it won't happen again. Even Coach K was saying, 'You've got to keep being aggressive like you were in the first half.' It's ok. It's a scrimmage, and I'll learn and I'll live and I'll get better from it."
